Go beyond party names, scrutinise propositions of all parties- Otabil urges

The General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Dr Mensah Otabil has called on Ghanaians to take their vote more seriously as they prepare to go to the polls next month.

He said the electorate must see their vote as a powerful sovereignty they are handing over to individuals who want to govern the country.

The ICGC head, who was addressing members of his congregation during a church service Sunday morning, was speaking on the theme ‘Your Vote’.

“Voting is very very responsible…supporting a political party is not like supporting a football team.

“When you support a football team, you allow yourself to compete through your team; so when they win you feel good, when they lose you feel bad…”

This kind of support, unlike the support for a political party, the pastor said, does not require a person give up his sovereignty.

To exercise that responsibility of voting, he said the electorate must “…fully consider all the proposals on offer [by the various political parties].

“Go beyond party names, go beyond party adverts, go beyond party slogans, consider what each party has proposed, what have they put on the table?”

This sermon comes a week after Pastor Otabil addressed a news conference and accused supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of twisting his sermons to bolster their political campaigns.

Meanwhile the leadership of the ICGC and the entire Christian Council have demanded the immediate withdrawal of all political adverts containing Dr Otabil’s voice.

They are also requesting an immediate end to insults to the Pastor for his response to the matter as well as an apology from the perpetrators.
