Nana Addo pledges to restore peace to Dagbon in honour of Aliu Mahama

The flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has pledged to restore peace to Dagbon in honour of the late former Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama.

According to Nana Addo, it was the wish of the late former veep that lasting peace returns to Dagbon after years of a protracted chieftaincy crisis there and Nana Akufo-Addo said he was committed to honouring his memory by working to foster peace and reconciliation in the internecine conflict that has deprived Dagbon of peace.

The NPP flagbearer made this observation when he paid tribute to Aliu Mahama a pre-burial service held at the Black Star Square in Accra, Sunday.

Nana said: “He [Aliu] wanted peace to return to Dagbon…I pledge to him that I will work to bring peace to Dagbon…”.

Recounting his memories of the former veep who recently worked in close collaboration with the NPP Vice-Presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in his campaign, Nana Akufo-Addo said he met Alhaji Aliu some 20 years ago when he [Nana Akufo-Addo] was helping efforts to expand the Daquah-Busia Memorial Club in Tamale in preparation for the formation of the NPP.

Alhaji Aliu Mahama “had an open house for all and sundry, especially for adherents of our common tradition,” Nana recalled with fondness, adding "he [Aliu] was a genial host, courteous and generous.”

The NPP leader said Aliu Mahama wanted the NPP to win over the Zongos and therefore worked closely with him [Nana] to achieve that aim. He hoped that the upcoming December polls will show that “[Aliu’s] work with the Zongos has brought dividends.”

In view of the former veep’s wish that “peace returns to his beloved Dagbon,” Nana Akufo-Addo said, “If anything will ensure that Aliu rests in peace, it will be the establishment of full peace and reconciliation in Dagbon and I pray that we will all work to achieve this.”
