Why Akufo Addo was withdrawn from Oxford University?

Many people have been asking why Nana Addo was withdrawing from probably the best university in the world, Oxford University

This has led to many heated arguments in all the major radio stations in Ghana. There had been calls from the pro-NDC group Research and Advocacy Platform (RAP) for the NPP flagbearer to publicly explain his inability to complete his degree at the prestigious institution, leaving the school shortly after he enrolled in the early 1960's.

The speaker of the group, Felix Kwakye Ofosu could not understand why Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party had excluded Oxford University in his CV. He went ahead to say that it is probably that he was dismissed for misconduct

However, Nana Akomea, NPP Communications Director revealed through JOY FM's super Morning Show that he(Nana Add) was withdrawn from Oxford University by his fathere because he felt it more prudent for his son to be educated in a Ghanaian University.

“Nana Addo went to Oxford University, his father withdrew him to come to Legon, that is what his father did; this is an 18-19 year old boy,” Akomea reported.

He denied claims that his party’s flagbearer had been sacked by the institution, saying that Nana Addo did not leave Oxford because he had done anything “untoward”.

According to him, it was the decision by Nana Addo’s father to give his son a blend of Ghanaian and Western education.

“Nana Addo’s father, I believe, wanted his son to have a blend so if you remember, he brought him to King Tackie Primary School at Adabraka in Accra, and then he took him to public school in England, a very exclusive private school where finished his secondary school, started Oxford and then the man [his father] brought him to Ghana. In my mind, you could see this is a man who is trying to give his son a blend of both worlds.

“When he finished University at Legon, he took him back so he could finish his Law and polish it up in France and so on,” Akomea explained.

The Commercial Drivers Association Greater Accra wishes to bring to your attention the Hardships that the incompetent administration of N.D.C has brought to bear on Commercial Drivers over for the past (4) four years that they assumed office.

We the Commercial drivers voted massively for the N.D.C during the 2008 election with the conviction that things will change for the better under the Attah Mills –Mahama administration. Indeed they made a lot of promises, including REDUCTION OF PRICE OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS drastically; FREE SCHOOL UNIFORMS for our children and access to bank loans to enable us drive our own cars, among other unfulfilled promises.

FAILED &UNFULFILLED PROMISES 

The Government of the N.D.C during the Electioneering Campaign in 2008 promised to reduce the prices of fuel drastically, but what do we see, it has rather gone up drastically.

Ghanaian now pays GH¢8.00 instead of GH¢6.55 for a gallon of premium; GH¢8.00 instead of GH¢5.96 for diesel and GH¢3.68 for a gallon of kerosene. We are reliably informed that the Mills - Mahama Government has added a hidden tax of GhC1.00 per gallon without parliamentary approval and monies accrued from this illegal tax have been lodged in “SPECIAL ACCOUNTS”. Kweku Kwarten took the matter to court and the court ordered payment into the consolidated account, which has not been done. Is this money which is being used for NDC campaign? Or building luxurious fuel stations or buying houses and cars? We want to know.

ROAD TOLLS

The N.D.C governments have increased ROAD TOLLS over 1000% and despite the astronomical increment in road tolls by the ruling N.D.C government, no significant improvement have been seen on our roads. We continue to see a lot of pot holes on our roads, Traffic lights are not functioning properly and almost all of our street lights have gone off.


Today a driver who plies from KASOA to ACCRA and its environment pays a toll of (GH¢10.00) that is (¢100,000.00) in old Cedis a day (GH¢300.00) that is ¢3million old Cedis a month and (GH¢3,600.00) that is ¢36 million a year. So by our calculation a driver who plies from Kasoa to Accra and its environs have paid at least (GH¢14,400.00): (¢144,000,000.00) old Cedissince N.D.C took power.

The driver contributes a lot to the government of N.D.C but cannot afford to pay for a single room and this has led most drivers sleeping in their cars and car parks.

GAS SHORTAGES

Since the N.D.C government took power there has not been a regular supply of Gas in the system for ever one week (1 week). But during the reign of President Kuffuor there was regular supply of Gas in the system to the extent that you could hear:

ROADWORTHY has gone up

A 185/70R 14 used tyre which was being sold in 2008 at the cost of (¢150,000.00) is now sold at (¢500,000.00)

BANKS
Because of the BAD GOVERNANCE of the N.D.C the Banks have turned drivers into slaves. When they buy a (¢100,000,000.00) car for you, in two years you pay a hundred (100%) interest on your car. The most serious part is that the maintenance cost is done by you the driver, which in total at the end of the two years you would have paid (¢350,000,000.00) on your car. How can a driver survive under this suppressive government? And pay his children’s school fees and hospital bills, how can drivers feed his family. No wonder drivers sleep in their cars and lorry parks. So all the commercial drivers in greater Accra and beyond are throwing their support for Nana Addo’s free S.H.S. and vote massively for Nana Addo and N.P.P. to come to power come 7th December 2012.

CONCLUSION 

It is time the political parties’ took drivers SERIOUSLY. Now we are sounding a warning to the Mahama led NDC government that they can’t take (drivers) for granted and that we drivers can make or unmake GOVERNMENTS.

Once IEA debate has been postponed, I will be there – Hassan Ayariga

The Presidential candidate of the People’s National Convention who was under siege from his party supporters for stating he would not participate in the 2nd IEA Presidential Debate - citing the mourning of former Vice President Aliu Mahama - says he feels vindicated on the postponement of the event.

Mr. Hassan Ayariga says now that the debate has been postponed beyond the five-day mourning period declared by the president, he would make an appearance, more so his health – one of the reasons he cited Monday for his decision not to appear for the debate – has improved significantly.

He said his comments Monday that the IEA platform was not a determinant of a candidate’s performance in the elections were predicated on the IEA Administrator, Jeane Mensah’s insistence that the debate would come off even if one candidate availed himself.

That hardliner position, he said, was unfortunate.

The IEA had, in view of Mr Ayariga's comments, said he would not be allowed to take part in the debate.

But Mrs Jeane who spoke on behalf of the IEA said Ayariga would now be accepted into Wednesday's debate.

"The PNC is a party that we've worked with closely and they have representation in Parliament; we had worked with Mr Ayariga for the Evening Encounters and the Presidential Debates and we thought that he was very enthusiastic about it so we were surprised to hear that he indicated that our platforms were not useful; we've heard that he still wants to come back, we don't know how useful it would be to him but since his party [is one] of the political parties we are working with, we would receive him at the debate," she said.

I’m fully prepared for IEA debate but I won’t go - Hassan Ayariga

The Presidential Candidate of the Peoples National Convention (PNC), Hassan Ayariga says he cannot participate in Tuesday’s IEA presidential debate.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Monday, Mr Ayariga –amid coughs – said he had prepared very well for the debate but cannot take part because he was suffering from malaria.

He also indicated that his major reason for opting out of the debate was also born out of respect for the late former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama who was interred on Sunday.

Ayariga said it was improper for the IEA to go ahead with the evening encounter just a day after the former veep was laid to rest.

He called on the IEA to postpone the debate.

"...The man was buried yesterday [Sunday] so I am challenging the IEA...to postpone it a week so that at least we show some level of respect for the passed vice president and dignity for the people and morality. And that is the reason why I am not going to attend the IEA debate."

However the Executive Director of the IEA, Jean Mensah who said the IEA was about 90 percent ready for the encounter stated the debate cannot be postponed.

"...I believe that the nation is mourning the former vice president but I think that the greatest tribute to him will be to host this debate..." because Aliu Mahama believed in democracy.

She told Joy FM’s Kojo Oppong Nkrumah that a one-minute silence will be observed in his honour and regretted that Mr Ayariga has taken this decision. The debate, she maintained, will continue as scheduled.

Meanwhile members of the PNC seem to be taken aback by the sudden decision of their flagbearer.

Atick Mohammed, a policy analyst for the party could not hide his disgust at the decision of his party’s flagbearer when he reacted to the news on the Super Morning Show.

He said the party was not aware of the decision and that he "just woke up this morning to [hear] that breaking news myself and I'm sure its so with so many other executives [of the PNC]. This is a unilateral decision, I'm sure he [Ayariga] has taken..."

Atick believed Ayariga was only giving an excuse to chicken out of the debate. "If you listen to the excuse he is giving, its so whack, so unconvincing..."

He could not understand why people who were close to the former veep are willing to partake in the debate while Ayariga is willing to boycott it.

Atick maintained that the PNC will not allow their flagbearer to continue taking such damaging decisions without consulting the party.

"...He has already done some damage to the party, if he proceeds with this decision I think that will be the last straw that will break the camel's back..."

Bawumia: All whaat NDC has done is to enrich themselves

The vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mamudu Bawumia has described the NDC as a party that had been working for just itself since it came to power four years ago.

He made this known when he visited students in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology last Saturday. He said thatthe NPP at the time, was growing the economy in nominal dollar terms by 62% every year.

CPP demands Mahama apology over tribal comments

The Convention People’s Party is demanding an unqualified apology from President John Mahama for his alleged tribal comments he has made.

The Vice Presidential candidate of the party Sherita Akosua Sarpong was unequivocal in her criticisms of the president, insisting such divisive comments should not come from the president.

John Mahama is alleged to have asked northerners to vote him because he is one of them.

He was alleged to have told Northerners during his tour of the region that it was time for a northerner to become a president.

The CPP insists the president’s comments were in bad taste.

“If I got up to say every woman should vote or every Ashanti should vote for me because I am an Akan. Why should we be doing that? What about the Ewes. What about the Ga-Adangmes and all that.

“Any statement that seems to identify a political leader with a tribal group as having to vote for you based on that group should not come from any leader that wants peace in this country, simple fact and that should not be acceptable by the good people of Ghana.

“I think we need an apology from the president,” adding that statement could incite others who want his seat to go along the same tangent.

But the Communications Minister Haruna Iddrisu said the President has nothing to apologise for.

“Apologise for what? President Mahama has stated publicly that he will president for all Ghanaians. He is appealing to the entire Ghanaian populace to support him on the basis of good governance to advance the better Ghana agenda of President Mills. Nowhere has President Mahama capitalized or used his tribe or ethnicity as basis to woo votes,” he stated.

He said Mahama traced his root when he visited the north but he did not use that as basis to ask for votes.

President gives 12 Land Cruisers to chiefs

The President, John Dramani Mahama has donated 12 Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles to the National House of Chiefs.

Each head of the ten Regional House of Chiefs is expected to get one of the vehicles; the remaining two would be on standby, Joy News' presidential affairs correspondent Seth Kwame Boateng reported.

The president made the donation when he met the National House of Chiefs at Kumasi in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday.

The vehicles are expected to help the chiefs in the discharge of their duties, Seth Kwame Boateng gathered.

The President of the National House of Chiefs, Naa Prof John Nabila assured President Mahama that the House was ready to extend to him the same help and respect they gave to his predecessor Prof. John Evans Atta Mills to enable him govern the country.

He also complained of inadequate budgetary allocation to the House of Chiefs, which he said is hampering their efforts to contribute to national development.

He noted that a number of chieftaincy conflicts in the country would have been solved if they had enough funds to go about their duty.

The President is expected to have a meeting with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II later today.

Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is also in the Ashanti Region campaigning.

Luv News Kwabena Ampretwum reports that Nana Addo has been campaigning in the Amansie West district where he accused President Mahama of preaching tribal politics, and has therefore told the electorate not to listen to him.

He told the people his free SHS manifesto promise is real, and would be implemented when they give him their mandate.

Though the NPP flagbearer’s convoy had to cover some long distances, that did not deter the enthusiastic crowd from following them, Kwabena Ampretwum said.

Thousands can't vote because they turned 18 after registration

Thousands of Ghanaians who qualify to vote in the December 7 elections because they will be 18 by that date will not have the opportunity to do so. 

That is because although they would have attained 18 years by December 7, 2012, they will be disenfranchised by virtue of the fact that there is no system that allows their names to be captured in the voters register upon attaining the voting age. 

Many of the affected potential voters turned 18 after May 5, 2012 when the Electoral Commission (EC) had closed registration for the compilation of a new biometric voters register to replace the old manual register. 

The EC undertook a biometric voters’ registration exercise between March 24 and May 5, 2012, meaning all persons who attained 18 years thereafter will not have the chance to vote. 

It is not clear as to the exact number of potential first-time voters likely to be disenfranchised as a result, but the 174,461 candidates who wrote this year's May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) give a fair idea as to the minimum number of people likely to be disenfranchised. 

That conservative figure of senior high school (SHS) students, as well as a large number of youth outside the school environment will be disenfranchised in the December polls. 

However, the EC has given an assurance that the problem will be addressed when it rolls out a continuous registration exercise next year to ensure that people register immediately they turn 18 years. 

The acting Director of Communications at the EC, Mr Christian Owusu-Parry, said the commission would come out with an official date for the beginning of the exercise next year. 

He said after the exercise had been rolled out, any person who turned 18 years could just walk into a district office of the EC for prompt registration. 

According to Mr Owusu-Parry, the Public Elections (Registration of Voter) Regulations 2012 (CI 72) imposed an obligation on the EC to undertake continuous registration of voters.

Our basic schools were never under trees - Presby church

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana has said its basic schools on government’s published list of schools removed from under trees were never under trees.

The government recently published a list of 600 schools it claimed to have removed from under trees.

The list had the Osu Presby Boys Primary, Osu Presby Girls Primary/JHS and Osu Salem '5' Primary on it.

The church said the schools have had classrooms for a very long time. Speaking to Citi News, the District Minister of the Osu Ebenezer Presby church Reverend Dr. Nana Opare Kwakye said government only offered to renovate the schools.

“It was an existing building, not a school under a tree. Government only helped to refurbish the building by re-roofing and changing door locks,” he said.

Rev Kwakye also opined, “The Osu Presby Cluster of Schools are very old schools and most of the people in the church and community have come from that school so these are not schools under trees.”

Obama's victory will help Mahama to beat Nana Addo: Okudzeto

The Deputy Information Minister, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa has predicted a win for His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. He made this prediction in reference to Obama's victory of his fierce contender Mitt Romney.

President Obama beat his Republican challenger Mitt Romney by securing the 270 Electoral Colleges needed to secure a second four-year term in office. With Florida's 29 electoral votes still undecided, Mr Obama won 303 electoral votes to Mr Romney's 206.

He said on JOY FM that the problems confronting the USA were created by the Republicans and therefore, the electorate felt it was not fair to quickly bring them back after four years.

He therefore prophesied that Obama's victory would be replicated by Ghanaians. Sam Okudzeto Ablakaw believes the December elections will favour the NDC as has been the trend in outcomes of US elections and how they impact those of Ghana since 1992.

“Those who are superstitious believe anytime democrats win, NDC wins and this has been happening since 1992. I am not superstitious but it is a good feeling that what keeps happening will happen,” Mr. Ablakwa maintained.

Obama re-elected as US President

President Barack Obama has been re-elected to a second term, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

America's first black president secured the 270 votes in the electoral college needed to win the race.

In his victory speech before supporters in Chicago, Mr Obama said he would talk to Mr Romney about "where we can work together to move this country forward".

Mr Obama prevailed despite lingering dissatisfaction with the economy and a hard-fought challenge by Mr Romney.

His Democrats also retained their majority in the Senate, which they have held since 2007, while Republicans kept control of the House.


The BBC's Mark Mardell in Chicago says the president is challenging his opponents, asking them to work with him.

With Florida's 29 electoral votes still undecided, Mr Obama won 303 electoral votes to Mr Romney's 206.

The popular vote, which is symbolically and politically important but not decisive in the race, remains very close.

Mr Obama greeted jubilant supporters and congratulated Mr Romney and Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan on their hard-fought campaign.

"We have picked ourselves up, we have fought our way back and we know in our hearts that for the United States of America the best is yet to come," he said.


Mr Obama said he was returning to the White House "more determined, and more inspired than ever about the work there is to do, and the future that lies ahead".

He pledged to work with Republican leaders in Congress to reduce the government's budget deficit, fix the tax code and reform the immigration system.

"We are an American family and we rise and fall together as one nation," he said.

In Boston, where his campaign was based, Mr Romney congratulated the president and said he and Mr Ryan had "left everything on the field" and had given their all in the campaign.


Referring to the struggling economy, Mr Romney said that now was not the time for "partisan bickering and political posturing", and that Republicans and Democrats must "put people before politics".

"I so wish that I had been able to fulfil your hopes to lead the country in a different direction but the nation chose another leader and so I join with you to earnestly pray for him and for this great nation," he said.

Under the US constitution, each state is given a number of electoral votes in rough proportion to its population. The candidate who wins 270 electoral votes - by prevailing in the mostly winner-takes-all state contests - becomes president.

On Tuesday, the president held the White House by assembling solid Democratic states and a number of important swing states such as Colorado, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Minnesota, Virginia and Wisconsin. His narrow victory in Ohio, a critical Mid-Western swing state, sealed the victory.


Billions spent
Mr Romney won North Carolina and Indiana, both of which Mr Obama won in 2008, as well as the solid Republican states.

But he was unable to win in Ohio or other states needed to breach the 270 threshold.

Also on Tuesday's ballot were 11 state governorships, a third of the seats in the 100-member US Senate and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives.

Mr Obama's victory came despite lingering high unemployment - 7.9% on election day - and tepid economic growth.

But voters gave him credit for his 2009 rescue of the US car industry among other policy accomplishments, and rewarded him for ordering the commando mission that killed Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan last year.

He and Mr Romney, as well as their respective allies, have spent more than $2bn (£1.25bn) - largely on adverts in swing states.

FULL TEXT OF PREZ RAWLINGS' STATEMENT TO THE FORMER PARTY EXECUTIVES WHO CALLED ON HIM TODAY.

My dear former executives and elder statesmen of the National Democratic Congress;

Let me first express my sincere gratitude for finding the time and energy to travel from various parts of the country to converge here in the supreme interest of the party.

At times such as this, I wish many who currently hold the helms of the party have the same level of deep commitment and love that you exhibited in the past and which has manifested yet again, today. I thank you once again for this great show of deep sense of belonging to our political tradition.

My dear friends and senior colleagues; I am also deeply touched by your plea that I overlook the deep problems our party has encountered since 2009 and join the campaign trail.

I have in recent public statements expressed my desire to see the NDC win theelection and have also expressed the feeling that John Mahama has brought some sense of hope to the NDC.

What has really given me hope, however, is the fact that you as former Chiefs of our party have noted with concern the problems that encounter our party and which cannot be wished away simply by the possibility of an electoral victory.

It is important that your statements here today are not cosmetic and will be followed up with real action and words of reproach and action to the current leaders of the party, some of whom approach party issues as if they have nounderstanding of the issues that affect the ordinary people of Ghana.

As a party we have failed in several aspects of governance, particularly with respect to offering confidence to the people that they will receive justice at all times. I need not delve into the details because you are aware of these and I have stated them several times over.

When I speak publicly against my own party it is with deep hurt, but I cannot betray the people who held this party up and gave it a life when many had little belief in us. You more so than others did so because of our religious adherence to the basic principles of probity and accountability. Corruption in its various forms and especially lack of justice in government leads to national instability.

I enjoin all of you here to hit the campaign trail. Your input is valuable to the cause so don’t go back home and watch from the sidelines.

Events of the past three years have led to divisions some of which led to the establishment of the NDP with the aim of salvaging the ideals of the P/NDC.

We may however have to call on our dear brothers and sisters in the NDP, the party leadership and membership to consider seriously withdrawing parliamentary candidates from constituencies where the NDC has credible candidates.

I hope to play my part in this election period. I am four years older than I was in 2008 and all the exertion plus my international roles mean I am a tired man. I was hoping to retire after the last election but unfortunately things did not fall in place the way they should have.

We must keep the channels of communication open so we can work hand in hand tore-ignite the revolution to restore our party to its rightful position of respect and value in our society.

Corruption and injustice has never had and will not ensure any future in national governance.

Konadu: Vote NDC out in the 2012 elections

Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings has asked Ghanaians to vote the National Democratic Congress(NDC) out of office since they don't deserve a second term in office.

She said during an interview on Asempa FM that corruption has now become a norm rather than the exception in the country. She also maintained that NDC had failed to deliver on its promise to Ghanaians in the heat of campaigns of the 2008 elections, to reduce poverty, corruption and economic hardship to the barest minimum, if they were voted into government.

She also said that her government (NDP) will will place the Ghanaian above politics and ensure basic social amenities are provided to make life more comfortable for the masses. According to her, her government will provide needed facilities at various educational levels to ensure that children get the required education that will go a long way to liberate them, after graduating from school.

She condemned what she termed as moves by some NDC faithful to bribe NDP parliamentary candidates to step down from the race, describing the practice as “high corruption.”

Nana Konadu urged the about 170 NDP parliamentary candidates not to yield to financial influence, saying that they can use their numbers to bargain to change policies in parliament to suit their own (NDP), in the event that the court does not rule in her favour to enable her to contest the presidential polls.

Rawlings to campaign for Mahama

Ghana's former President Jerry John Rawlings has rescinded his decision not to campaign for the sitting president of Ghana.

The spokesperson of the ex-president, Kofi Adams, made this known to the public when he was interviewed on Asempa FM by Ekosii Sen.

According to Kofi Adams, the former President rescinded his decision. The reason given was that he( Rawlings) has seen some changes under the leadership of his excellency John Dramani Mahama.

US set for final campaigning day

US presidential rivals Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are approaching the final day of their election battle in a frantic fight for swing state votes.

Mr Obama is scheduled to appear in Madison, Wisconsin, accompanied by Bruce Springsteen, before going on to Iowa and Ohio.

Mr Romney is due in Florida - where polls suggest he is ahead - in Virginia, New Hampshire and Ohio.

Analysts say the election will come down to a handful of swing states.

Mr Obama and Mr Romney are running almost neck-and-neck in national polls, but polls of many key battlegrounds show Mr Obama narrowly ahead.

However, neither camp is exuding absolute confidence, the BBC's North America editor Mark Mardell reports.


The campaign has been most intense in Ohio, which no Republican has ever lost and still made it to the White House.

The pair spent Sunday addressing crowds across the country, with Mr Romney speaking in Pennsylvania, a state his aides insist he can now win on Tuesday.

Mr Obama held rallies in New Hampshire and Florida and carried on to Ohio and Colorado in the evening.

In Florida, Democrats have filed a legal case demanding an extension of time available for early voting, citing unprecedented demand.

In Ohio, Republican election officials will go to court on Monday to defend an 11th-hour directive to local election officials.

Last month, a federal appeals court reinstated early voting on the last three days before Tuesday's election.


The ruling overturned a state law saying early voting should end on the Friday before the election, making an exception only for voters living overseas and for military personnel, who tend to favour Republican candidates.

Critics say this potentially favours the Obama camp.

Race 'tightening'

A final poll published on Sunday by Ohio's Columbus Dispatch gave Mr Obama a 2% lead - 50% to 48% - over his rival, within the margin of error.

Both candidates visited the Buckeye State on Sunday, with Mr Romney telling crowds in Cleveland that Mr Obama has failed in his pledge to be a "post-partisan" president and criticising his record.

"He's been divisive, blaming, attacking, dividing and - by the way - it's not only Republicans that he refused to listen to, he also refused to listen to independent voices."

Later on Sunday, he spoke in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, his first visit there in the final stages of the campaign. Democrats say the Romney team's last-minute decision to campaign in the state is a sign of desperation, but polls do show a tightening race.

"The people of America understand we're taking back the White House because we're going to win Pennsylvania," Mr Romney told the crowd in Morrisville.

Mr Obama made another appearance in Cincinnati, Ohio, where Stevie Wonder opened a huge evening rally.

Earlier in the day at a rally in Concord, New Hampshire, Mr Obama said: "We have come too far to turn back now."

He said he would work across party lines to break the political gridlock in Washington, but would not compromise on priorities such as healthcare and college financial aid.

Activists have been stepping up efforts across the crucial swing states.

In Wisconsin, student volunteers have been putting in 14-hour days in an effort to deliver the state for Mr Obama, the BBC's Paul Adams reports from Madison.

An opinion poll on Sunday for ABC News and the Washington Post put the two candidates at 48%, with even voters who term themselves independents split evenly on 46%.

Mr Romney remains favoured among whites, seniors and evangelical Christians; Mr Obama among women, non-whites and young adults.

The president also remains slightly ahead in most of the nine-or-so swing states that will determine the election.

Opinion polls published on Saturday showed him well-placed in Iowa, Nevada and Ohio, but most remain within the polls' own margins of error.

Education experts gave NPP the green light on free SHS - MP

Professor Ameyaw Ekumfi, Member of Parliament for Techiman North and former Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has stated that Nana Akufo- Addo’s free Senior High School (SHS) education campaign promise is feasible.

According to him a group of educational think tanks and policy consultants were contacted before the New Patriotic Party (NPP) adopted policy into its manifesto.

Prof Ameyaw Ekumfi, who was also former Minister of Ports and Harbours in the Kufuor regime, made this known at the Inauguration of the Senior Patriots Club of the University of Education Winneba (UEW) branch in Winneba.

He described as falsehood claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign team that the policy would affect basic education.

Prof Ameyaw Ekumfi, currently a Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, therefore urged Ghanaians to ignore the NDC communicators and Ministers who cast doubts on the implementation of a free SHS by the NPP.

He said the NPP has facts and figures on how the policy would be implemented to help Ghanaian children who are less privileged to have access to SHS education.

The former Minister said funds for the policy would not be sourced from outside the country, but rather revenues from the oil, the GETFund and other sources.

He said the problems of supervision and teacher motivation would be addressed to encourage teachers and other non-teaching staffs to help move the policy forward.

Mr Samuel Kweku Boafo, former Ashanti Regional Minister, urged students who are mostly members of the Youth wing of NPP to intensify their campaign and educate parents about the importance of a free SHS policy.

He said the NDS’s claim that a free SHS is only attainable in 20 years time cannot be true, adding that Ghanaians cannot wait for that many years before all children can get free SHS education.

Dr Henry Augustine Puffa, Chairman of the Senior Patriots Club of UEW, said the NPP has a dream team to take Ghanaians to the Promised Land.

He added that the club would assist the Effutu NPP to wrest power from the NDC in the December 7, elections.

As Ghanaians prepare to elect their leader on December 7, 2012, I present to readers 50 of the 822 promises made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) prior to the 2008 general elections. Kindly read and make your own judgment about the Caretaker president, John Mahama and his party as he lies to you again.

1. They NDC promised to reduce fuel prices drastically – a gallon of petrol has increased from GHC3.60 a gallon in 2008 to GHC8.0, showing a drastic increase in price in the last 4 years.

2. The NDC promised to make Ghanaians pay one-time premium for the NHIS – The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has collapsed as the one-time premium has given way to “Capitation” and Cash and Carry system.

3. The NDC promised to give 40% of ministerial appointments to women – Only 11% appointments has been made so far and the maltreatment of Nana Konadu Agyemang and other female journalists are clear examples. NDC has only 4 female MPs as against NPP’s 14.

4. The NDC will build 200,000 houses within 5yrs through the STX Korea deal and 30,000 of the houses would be given to the security officers – STX Korea deal is dead and the government of Ghana was forced to pay over $260m abrogation cost.

5. They promised to put money in your pockets – in the end there have been astronomical increases in utility tariffs (electricity, water, gas) and school fees. Poverty is on the increase and the number of strike actions and demonstrations tell it all.

6. The NDC promised to cut down waste and profligate spending – The NDC purchased 5 military aircrafts at a cost of $250m. Another GHC48,000 had been spent on Kwame Nkrumah’s birthday, and GHC858m on judgment debts, including Woyome’s GHC51m. The NDC is building a $20m party headquarters in Accra. John Mahama’s salary is now GHC 12,000 per month excluding other allownaces.

7. The NDC promised to build a factory in each district in Ghana– Where can we find the factories? Instead, John Mahama is buying bulldozers to kill flies. Over 300 factories were sold by the P/NDC government.

8. The NDC vowed to force all their appointees to declare their assets within 6 months into office – however, none of the appointees has declared any asset since 2009.

9. The NDC promised to set up a truly non-partisan and competent commission on the murders of Ya Na and Issah Mobila, and prosecute the killers – There is no evidence for prosecution according to Kofi Adams.

10. The NDC promised to stop the appointment of MPs and Ministers to positions of Chairman of Public Sector Companies to avoid intrusion of the party - Board Chairman of GETFund is Kwabena Adjei (NDC Chairman), Board Chairman of Road Fund - Joe Gidisu (MP and Minister of Roads and Highways), Board Chairman of NHIS, Doe Adjaho (MP and 1st Dep. Speaker of Parliament). Board Chairman of Ghana Civil Aviation, Alban S.K. Bagbin (MP and Minister of Health).

11. The NDC promised to clear all filth in the cities within 100 days – Cholera outbreak is the order of the day. Ghana is ranked the 2nd dirtiest country in West Africa.

12. The NDC promised to improve the country’s education at all levels – the BECE has recorded worst results since 2009. Only tea cups embossed with the president’s portrait have been given to these pupils. John Mahama is asking for more years to do that.

13. The NDC promised to build 2 universities in Volta and Brong-Ahafo Regions in the “Action Year” (2011) – The construction sites have now turned into zoological gardens. The School of Forestry in Sunyani and the Nurses’ Training College are being converted into Universities instead.

14. The NDC promised to eliminate all schools under trees – In spite of the oil revenue; several schools are still under trees. According to 2011 Budget Statement, only 175 ‘schools under tress’ had been eliminated but the NDC claims to have built 1,700. The NDC has failed to publish the said schools after persistent appeals by concerned citizens.

15. The NDC promised to provide all basic school pupils with school uniforms - for nearly 4 yrs only 20% of the pupils have received the free school uniforms after all the noise about the distribution.

16. The NDC promised to expand the school feeding programme to cover all basic schools – that did not happen as some schools in NPP strongholds were removed from the programme whilst those in the NDC strongholds have been included.

17. The NDC promised to make armed robbery a thing of the past – Social vices are on the increase. Police officers are being killed by armed robbers.

18. The NDC promised to provide meaningful jobs to the Ghanaian youth – For the first time in the history of Ghana, there is an Association of Unemployed Graduates, and Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, a Dep. Minister of Local Government calls them lazy people and sees them as an evil group.

19. The NDC promised to generate funds internally and not rely on IMF, World Bank or foreign loans – Surprisingly, Mills-Mahama NDC government has secured over GHC18bn loan abroad. Another $3bn from China is in the pipeline. According to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana’s debt stands at GHC25.3m as at 2011.

20. The NDC promised to bridge the poverty gap between the north and the south – Poverty between the north and the south is widening.

21. The NDC promised to put GHC200m into the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) every year – In the 2011 Budget Statement, only GHC8m was voted into it. SADA has come to a standstill.

22. The NDC promised to build the Eastern and Western corridor infrastructure – That was a camouflage as this project keeps finding itself in the Budget Statements every year.

23. The NDC promised to prosecute all corrupt ministers and appointees without asking for evidence – What happened to “Kyinkyinka” Muntaka (pampers), Mahama Ayarega (tractors), Carl Wilson (imported vehicles), and Asiedu Nketia (block making)? Why are Mills’ appointees committing gargantuan crimes against the state? Why did Mills sack his former Attorney-General, Hon. Martin Amidu?

24. The late NDC leader promised to be a father of all Ghanaians – Selective justice has replaced the “father for all mantra”. Why did Mills direct his DCEs/MDCEs to open their doors for only NDC members and sympathizers? Why arrest Hon. Ken Agyepong and leave Nii Lamptey Vanderpuije?

25. The NDC promised to do away with politics of vendetta – Why did the president order his appointees, especially Victor Smith, to seize vehicles and offices belonging to his political opponents? What has happened to ex-president Kufuor’s End of Service Benefits? Why did the Mills-Mahama government file 13 high profile court cases against his political opponents and lost them all?

26. The NDC promised to turn the Golden Jubilee House into a poultry farm - Why is the place being occupied by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the current vice president?

27. The NDC promised to abrogate the Ghana Telecom sale to Vodafone – What are you waiting for, Mr. President? Vodafone is the leading mobile network in Ghana today.

28. The NDC promised to probe the Ghana @ 50 celebrations and prosecute all those who misappropriated and misapplied public funds – What came out of the reports by the 23 Commissions of Enquiry set up by the president?

29. The NDC promised to modernize agriculture – Agriculture has seen a consistent decline in growth since 2009. Post harvest losses are high. How many of the existing agricultural problems have been solved by the current administration?

30. The NDC promised to cut down rice importation by 50% - Rice importation has increased from $400m to $700m annually. The price of a bag of rice sold at GH48 is now GHC75.

31. The NDC promised to build airports in Cape Coast and Tamale and also build the Kotokoraba market – We are still waiting for these projects to start.

32. The NDC promised to improve infrastructure in the country – the late President had to bow his head down in shame when he passed through some of the roads. Is the Sofoline interchange in Kumasi part of the infrastructure?

33. The NDC promised to expand all social interventions introduced by my predecessor – most of the interventions, e.g. NHIS and free maternal care have collapsed and now maternal mortality is on the increase.

34. The NDC promised that their leader would never be a globe-trotter like Kufuor – By the help of the Presidential Jet, John Mahama has travelled around the globe more than any Ghanaian leader. As for the travels made by the late president, the least said about him, the better. He went to Japan, made a u-turn for the Population Census and disappeared the following day. Similarly, he left for the US for 6 weeks, returned to Ghana for 3 days and went back to the US under the pretence of meeting investors during the Christmas period, not knowing he was seeking medical attention.

35. The NDC promised to make full investigations into the serial killings of women that occurred between 1999 and 2000 – We are still waiting.

36. The NDC promised to do away with the introduction new taxes – however, several new taxes, including Akpetshie, airport, and environmental taxes have been introduced.

37. The NDC promised to wage war against narcotics trade – Cocaine turns into soda under the NDC government. On September 25, the UK Border Force seized about 7.5 kilos of cocaine valued at 750,000 at Heathrow. Another 1.5 metric tonnes of cannabis (wee) valued at £4.3m was seized in the same week and it was described as the biggest haul in three years.

38. The NDC promised to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections – the Biometric Voters’ Registration exercise turned into violence. What happened at Akwatia, Chereponi, and Atiwa during the by-elections?

39. The NDC under Mills promised to burn Ghana like Kenya if the elections go the other way – Fire outbreaks, mining disasters; floods have characterized Mahama-Amissah-Arthur administration.

40. The NDC promised to ensure a level playing field for the 2012 elections – Today some police officers are registering foreigners in Togo, the EC has been registering NDC members in Ghanaian embassies.

41. The NDC promised to strengthen all state institutions - CHRAJ, EOCO, EC, PURC, GSS etc. – It took more than 2 years before the Population and Housing Census figures were released. Ghana Statistical Service has been cooking inflation figures for the NDC government. Kwabena Adjei, NDC Chairman threatened to ‘kill the cat’, and 2 members of the EC have been alleged to have taken bribes.

42. The NDC promised to promote freedom of speech - This has been substituted with “causing fear and panic”. Nana Darkwah, Amina, and Hon. Ken Agyapong can tell you more about that.

43. The NDC promised to pay professional allowance to all professional teachers – In the end teachers who embarked on demonstration were sprayed with hot water. Others were stripped naked in front of their school children in Bawku.

44. The NDC promised to form a government on expertise and competence, not on party or family interests - Who are the 'bootlickers', 'greedy bastards', and the 'Team B' ministers? Why did the president sack Dr. Nsiah Asare and Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng of KATH and Cardio-thoracic centre respectively?

45. The NDC’s leader swore, and urged Ghanaians to try him and see. He promised not to disappoint Ghanaians because he was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth – in the end mansions were built by President Mills through Regimanuel Estate but his Director of Communications described them as “token”.

46. The NDC’s leader said he was a better man for a BETTER GHANA – yet the party’s founder, J.J. Rawlings referred to Mills as “Konongo Kaya” and “Mortuaryman” as a result of his incompetence.

47. The NDC promised to give 10% of oil revenue to the people of Western Region – this promise was not fulfilled.

48. The late Mills promised to consult Rawlings 24 hours a day – Before his death, he was not on talking terms with former President Rawlings. The General Secretary of the NDC, John Asiedu Nketia has made the founder of the party a “barking dog”.

49. The NDC promised to heal wounds and unite the nation – the nation is polarized as the NDC continues to play the tribal card. The one-sided appointment in the current administration is there for everyone to see. The NDC has even failed to unite itself as a party.

50. The NDC promised that there would be no NPP Ghana or NDC Ghana – Ghana is seriously divided between NDC and NPP. Politics of ideas has given way to politics of insults.

Fellow Ghanaians, today the NDC under John Mahama is making similar promises with the view to retaining power. Do you trust this party that has ruled Ghana for 23 years – 11 years for P/NDC, and 12 years for NDC? What is the NDC’s legacy? Why don’t you join us in kicking this hypocritical, arrogant, deceitful, violent, and incompetent party out of power on December 7?

Let’s vote for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and all the NPP Parliamentary Aspirants in the upcoming elections. The Free SHS policy, the Teacher First policy, the Inner-city Development policy, the Housing, Economic, Industrial, and Health policies are all doable.
