RAWLINGS WOULD NOT BEG MILLS

Suspended General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress and aide to the Rawlingses says the former president will only be back on the campaign trail of the National Democratic Congress if the values and principles he so much reveres are restored in the party.

Kofi Adams insists no amount of prompting and appeals would get him back if the values, conviction and principles which are the foundation on which the NDC was formed are broken.

He was speaking to Joy News’ Evans Mensah on Top Story over attempts by a coalition of chiefs, regional ministers to reconcile with President John Mills.

Upper East Minister Mark Woyongo had confirmed attempts to get the two most powerful forces within the NDC to bury the hatchet and “sing from the same hymn sheet.”

Whilst he would not clearly admit that the reconciliation is to bring Mr. Rawlings back on the campaign trail, he was however unequivocal, saying peace must reign between the two men as election 2012 beckoned.

But Kofi Adams said Mr. Rawlings is not aware of any such meeting describing it [meeting] as a “wrong premise” which is likely to give a wrong result.

He stated Mr. Rawlings does not in any way constitute a “threat to the peace in the 2012 elections,” insisting a meeting for reconciliation is not the way to go.

He said whilst the ex-president is opened to party unity, that unity will only be premised on the values and principles of the party.

He did not however mention what those values and principles are.

Touting the credentials of the ex-president, Adams said his boss is driven by politics of conviction and not of convenience.

He said if Mr Rawlings has good reason to be part of the campaign he will join without anybody prompting him.

According to him, the former President won the 2008 elections for the NDC based on his convictions, adding if those values and convictions are restored by the party there will be no need for meeting with chiefs to get him back on the campaign trail.

He said however that Mr. Rawlings will be waiting for the chiefs to make the request for the meeting and if he schedules allow, he will meet them.

Pollster Ben Ephson is also convinced the coalition of chiefs to mediate between the two high profile personalities is not the right way to go, especially when chiefs are not allowed by the constitution to engage in partisan politics.

He would rather the council of elders of the NDC meet together with the wife of the ex-president Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings to resolve the crisis.

He said the approach the coalition is taking is too academic and unrealistic.
