The Spokesperson for the Rawlingses, Mr Kofi Adams has replied the General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress over his positive defiance comments, maintaining the NDC scribe lacks an understanding of the meaning of positive defiance.
Mr. Johnson Asiedu-Nketia at the weekend called on party faithfuls who believe in the principles of June 4 to positively defy any suggestion by the former first family to vote out the NDC in the upcoming elections, saying that recent utterances and actions of the Rawlingses indicate they want the party in opposition.
But Mr Kofi Adams, reacting to the comments on Joy FM's Super Morning Show Monday, said the NDC General Secretary had misfired and that it was statements such as the ones made by Mr Asiedu-Nketia that were deepening disunity in the party.
"…How on earth can you unite around principles and values if you have these types of meetings going on, and these kinds of comments and these kinds of discussions?”
“I believe that our General Secretary has misunderstood what positive defiance represents. Positive defiance is asking one to decide where the good of the country or an organization stands tall,” he explained.
Mr Adams noted that Mr and Mrs Rawlings had not, in the first place, asked anybody to vote for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo. What they have asked of members and supporters of the NDC, he claimed, is to call the current leaders of the party to order.
“Jerry Rawlings or Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings have not said anywhere that nobody should support the NDC. They have said the government that has been formed out of the NDC and some leaders of the NDC have abandoned the values of the NDC.”
He said there was, therefore, no basis for the General Secretary of the party to be counseling supporters to defy Mr and Mrs Rawlings if they asked them to vote against the party in December this year.
Kofi Adams further stated that leaders of the NDC, instead of sticking to the values on which the party was formed, had deviated and were now seeking to hide behind the principle of positive defiance - which he explained must be used for the good of the party and nation as a whole.
The Rawlingses will not stop criticising the government when necessary, he insisted.
