André Villas-Boas's overhaul of his Tottenham Hotspur squad has gathered pace with Emmanuel Adebayor finally completing his transfer from Manchester City and Michael Dawson close to following Sébastien Bassong out the door.
The 28-year-old Adebayor, who enjoyed a productive loan spell at Spurs last season, has completed a £6m move from the league champions having reached agreement over his severance package. His last City appearance was in December 2010 but the player still had two years to run on his £170,000-a-week contract, with Spurs understood to have struck a compromise over his new deal which involves the payment of a significant signing-on fee and a lower salary to be incorporated into the club's wage structure.
"It may have taken longer than expected but I am delighted to be back at Tottenham Hotspur," said Adebayor. "I really enjoyed my time here last season and I am hoping we can achieve great things together again." The striker is in contention to play against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, although the Croatia midfielder Luka Modric will not be considered while he awaits the outcome of his proposed transfer to Real Madrid.
Also leaving Spurs imminently will be Dawson, the England centre-half, who is close to joining Queens Park Rangersas Mark Hughes seeks defensive cover having seen his side exposed by Swansea City so ruthlessly on Saturday. A deal worth an initial £5.5m, with the potential to rise to nearer £10m, has been agreed in principle between the clubs with the player now to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical at Loftus Road. The 28-year-old made only 13 appearances last season after struggling with injury. Bassong, meanwhile, has joined Norwich City on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee, with Tom Huddlestone –close to joining Stoke – David Bentley, Giovani dos Santos and Jermaine Jenas also available for transfer.
QPR hope to follow up Dawson's arrival with that of the Marseille midfielder Stephane Mbia, who is available at around £4m, with talks on-going with the French club over Joey Barton's potential loan move to the Stade Velodrome. Marseille's Spanish full-back Cesar Azpilicueta is nearing a £7m move to Chelsea, while West Ham have expressed an interest in taking the Rennes winger Razak Boukari on loan.
