Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has chided the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia over his comments that he should not interfere in the professional work of the Electoral Commission concerning the creation of the 45 new constituencies.
Johnson Asiedu Nketia at the NDC’s rally in Kumasi on Thursday described the former President as an old man who should not meddle in the affairs of the EC but allow the Commission the freedom to work.
But the Spokesperson for the former President, Frank Agyekum told Citi News, Mr. Nketia’s comments are pathetic and hence should be ignored.
He explained that the former President meant well for the country, adding he will not stop speaking on national issues just because Johnson Asiedu Nketia says so.
He said: “All what President Kufuor is saying is that we have an electoral process and everybody now is settled with the 230 constituencies that we have and especially in an election year when they begin to introduce new things that do not meet with the consensus of the people, that is a sure way of fomenting trouble.”
Mr. Agyekum added that “nobody knows how far this thing is going to go and already the country is split into two. Apart from the NDC, I don’t know of any other party that is enthused about the creation of these new constituencies.”
“So all what he is saying is don’t let us do things which we may regret later on and so if somebody like Asiedu Nketia says what he is saying then it is very pathetic because President Kufuor has sat in constituency creation matters from Kenya through Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ivory Coast so he knows and understands these things,” he stated.
He thus said: “I want to assure Asiedu Nketia and people like him that President Kufuor has the right to speak about matters of state and he will speak about matters of state when he thinks he has to speak about them and the posture of Asiedu Nketia will not change anything.”
