Former Ivory Coast football federation president Jacques Anouma says he will maintain his candidacy for CAF presidency after the continental football body adopted a new amendment last week, which many observers say could hinder the Ivorian’s ambition.
To be eligible to vie for CAF’s presidency, the new rule says: “All candidates for election to the presidency of CAF, in addition to necessary competence, must be or have been a member of the Executive Committee of CAF.”
Anouma is a member of the FIFA executive committee which qualifies him to be an ex-officio member of Caf's Executive Committee, but without voting rights, although he can participate in all the deliberations.
However, the 58-year-old former accountant says he is not affected by the amendment that he is a full-fledged member of CAF Executive Committee.
“I am not concerned with the new election law. Since 2007 when I was elected to the FIFA Executive Committee, I have been a member of the CAF Executive Committee,” Anouma said at a press conference in Dakar on Tuesday.
“I’m set for the race and only waiting for my home FA to submit my candidature, even if the rules say another football federation can do it on behalf of the aspirant,” he added.
The amendment, which was a proposal from the Algeria football federation president Mohamed Raouraoua, was adopted with a 44 against 6 votes during CAF’s congress in Seychelles on September 3.
Anouma is one of incumbent president Issa Hayatou’s top challenger and critics of the amendment say the Cameroonian is behind the idea to kick the Ivorian out of the race.
Hayatou has been in charge of the body since 1987 and is most likely to seek another term next March.
