The National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yaw Boateng Gyan, has told Citi News he has learnt a big lesson to be circumspect in his communication with members of his party.
Mr. Gyan was severely criticised with sections of civil society calling for his arrest when he was caught on tape promising to recruit supporters of the NDC into Ghana’s Special Forces to promote the ruling party’s agenda in the upcoming elections.
Speaking to Citi News’ Shamima Muslim at the party headquarters after a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Tuesday, Mr. Gyan mentioned that he is a changed man now after the leaked tape experience.
He said: “Now if I am dealing with people, I have to know whom I am dealing with because these boys are boys that I thought we were trying to help them, but if one of them could do such a thing, then one need to be very careful.”
“I think one needs to be very careful. Careful - that is the watchword,” Mr. Gyan added.
The NDC bigwig, however, insists he has done no wrong saying, “I haven’t done anything wrong, but you know it is politics because some people have made more serious statements than what I did. What did I do?”
He explained that “the people were sent out there to do some specific jobs and the job was that immediately these people [National Democratic Party] got their provisional certificate and we were thinking that it is a party born out of NDC, and for that matter we need to get information whether some of our people are flirting with this new political party and they came out to give us a lot of information that helped us.”
Mr. Gyan also mentioned that on the hindsight, what he would not have said “is to mention the Minister of Finance. We have a lot of people who are ready to finance and help us to run our programme.”
