A Former Press Secretary to ex-president John Agyekum Kufuor has deplored the selective manner of administering justice by the security agencies under the Mills’-led NDC government.
Kwabena Agyei Agyapong claims several government appointees and NDC functionaries have made statements in the past that could be interpreted as treasonable and even sometimes against him, but interestingly, the government, for purposes of political expediency, turned a blind eye to them all.
He was commenting on the arrest of NPP Member of Parliament for Assin North, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong by the police on Monday. The NPP MP is reported to have incited members of his party who are Ashantis to take up arms against their Volta counterparts. He is currently being held at the Greater Accra Regional office of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) after being charged with treason by the police.
Speaking in an interview with Fiifi Boafo on OmanFM’s National Agenda show, Kwabena Agyapong said he believes the Assin North MP’s comments have been taken out of context and described his arrest as unfortunate.
The former presidential spokesperson said he cannot fathom how the public, especially members of the ruling party, can outrightly condemn the comments made by the lawmaker, when similar comments had been passed by twice Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces and the current National Security Advisor, Brigadier-General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah and a host of other NDC leading figures on Radio Gold.
To him, the NPP MP spoke metaphorically since no amount of words can amount to treason unless there is evidence to show that he (Ken) had concrete plans to execute his assertions.
“Ken’s temper was high but he made a figurative speech…does he even have an army to declare war? He was telling party members to be vigilant. I know of a court case where a man said I will kill you but the judge presiding over the case ruled in his favour because according to him, the man didn’t have the instrument to carry out his threat,” he said.
Touching on scenes of violence recorded at some registration centres in the ongoing biometric exercise that has left some supporters of the NPP in Odododiodoo sustaining various degrees of injuries, the astute politician called on President Mills to demonstrate his commitment for a peaceful election in December, stressing that once he (Mills) has been bequeathed with a peaceful country, the onus lies on him to ensure same.
Whiles challenging government to spell out the exact job schedule of Nii Lantey Vanderpuije who he accuses of running riot since the country already has a Chief-of-Staff who is officially in charge of all operations at the presidency, Mr Kwabena Agyapong slammed President Mills and accused him of appointing ministers who lack proper upbringing.
“There is nothing like Director of Operations (at the presidency), it is the work of the Chief of Staff together with his two deputies. The Chief-of-Staff of every government is in charge of Castle operations. I now understand why the devil finds work for the idle worker like Nii Lantey Vanderpuije…Mills normally appoints people like Kobby Acheampong who lack proper upbringing...Kobby Acheampong told me at the Electoral Commission in the heat of the 2008 elections that they would ensure I do not survive…they will kill me just like they did to my father (have you watched the African Election?). Can you imagine that? The whole nation knows the sad end of my late father and you have someone like that telling me they would do that (to me)…He was probably a little boy when my dad was alive,” Kwabena Agyapong said.
