Spain crash out of the Olympic Games after losing to Honduras
Spain, who started out as one of the favourites, were knocked out of
the men's Olympic football after losing 1-0 to Honduras, having not
scored a point from the first two matches. Spain's elimination clears
the way for Brazil, who secured its place in the quarter finals together with Japan.
'La Roja' conceded a goal after seven minutes, scored by Jerry Bengtson, and were unable to turn the game around. To start with Spain played badly, failing to create chances and, towards the end, was let down by poor finishing and bad luck.
Honduras, who could have killed off the game when the ball hit the post, heroically resisted the Spanish onslaught unleashed by Luis Milla's young players, who were also unlucky to hit the woodwork on several occasions. Between the misses and some contested refereeing decisions, Spain's disappointing participation in the men´s Olympic football was brought to a close.
This is a major upset for Spanish football, especially when so many people had pinned their hopes on this team. Spain will play its last game against Morocco on 1st August in Manchester, while Japan will play Honduras in Coventry.
