Rival clubs Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak are expected
to shake the local football scene with a mighty clash soon, as
telecommunication giants MTN and managements of both clubs have
initiated plans for the battle for supremacy which has been dubbed the
MTN Super 2 Clash.
Organizers and managers of the two clubs are yet to settle on the
venue for the first leg but the first has been slated for August 26,
2012.
The second leg encounter will come on a week later, which is
September 2. Last year, a Christian Non-Governmental Organisation, Kome
to My Aid International brought the two clubs under the Super 2 umbrella
at the Baba Yara and Ohene Djan Sports Stadia respectively and for fans
of the two clubs and other local football enthusiasts it was a
thrilling Super 2 experience.
Whereas the first game in Kumasi ended in a crunch 1-1 draw, the
Porcupines routed the Phobians 3-1 in the capital to mar their centenary
celebration. Public and Supporters Relations Manager, Listowell Yesu
Bukarson, who disclosed this to Kotoko Express at press time, confirmed
Kotoko’s participation.
He said the fabulous lads have started feverish preparation for the
two big games. For both clubs, the two matches will be key in their
pre-season programme, where newly recruited players are being tried
along with current members of their teams.
Kotoko players resumed training sessions at Adako Jachie last week
and as they go into their second week of training after their month-long
break, their work load is likely to be intensified to put them in the
right shape for their first, major, pre-season assignment.
Kotoko’s preseason programme will officially start on August 12, at
the Ghana Soccer Centre of Excellence at Prampram. The team will thus be
there for two weeks. Listowell Yesu Bukarson explained the team’s
departure to Kumasi after their two-week camping at Prampram would be
dependent on where the first leg of the Super 2 match would be played.
“If the first leg will be played in Kumasi, we will return to Kumasi.
However, if it will be in Accra, we will proceed to Accra for the game”
he said adding that the team would also be at Adukrom in the Eastern
Region for one week, after the second leg of the Super 2 encounter.
