Wayne Rooney
is facing four weeks out after being carried off in Manchester United’s
3-2 victory over Fulham with a slashed thigh, as pictures revealed the
full extent of the hideous injury.
But Rooney’s first home appearance of the season ended nastily as he had to be taken straight to hospital when Hugo Rodallega accidentally landed on his leg after failing to connect with a shot in the final moments of the match.
Pictures that emerged immediately after the game showed just how bad the injury was - cutting deeply into the muscle tissue of his leg.
‘It's a very bad gash, he's been whisked off to hospital and I think he'll be out for four weeks,’ confirmed Ferguson.
The lay-off for Rooney means Ferguson will have no choice but to continue starting new signing Robin van Persie.
But the Scot is likely to have few qualms about that as the Dutchman got off to the perfect start on his home debut with a wonderful goal to equalise after Damien Duff had put Fulham ahead early on.
But a mix-up between David de Gea and Nemanja Vidic saw the Serbian put the ball into his own net and allowed Fulham the chance to get back in it.
The gash looks to be six inches long and will require multiple stitches at hospital when the club's medical team will give a more accurate prognosis of how long he will be sidelined.
