The former president Jerry John Rawlings has revealed that his meeting with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo was to signify that he is a man of peace and believes in peaceful co-existence.
According to Rawlings, “our late President [John Mills] was known as ‘asomdwe’ [peace] and I guess part of that credential came from the fact that he treated the opponents in a very civilised manner. So if asomdwe is the most desirable way of ensuring a peaceful co-existence why should I continue to remain in a place and be regarded as the trouble maker and warmonger.”
“It is almost as if within the NDC people want to have our cakes and eat it at the same time and I should be the warmonger and others can play the diplomatic role.”
Former president Rawlings made these comments when he delivered the Freedom Power Lectures on Wednesday. The lecture was under the topic: “Corruption; a threat to democracy and national development.”
President Rawlings said it is regrettable that people want to misconstrue his unprecedented meeting with Nana Addo as an endorsement for the NPP.
Mr. Rawlings also took time to explain what he meant when he said the NDC is afraid to go into opposition at the National Democratic Party’s congress.
“I want to be properly understood that whenever I am saying to my people [NDC] that why are you afraid of going into opposition? I am not saying that I want them to go into opposition. I will want them to win, but if you were to lose and go into opposition can you enjoy any safety or security from the judiciary system; the laws of the country,” he asked.
Rawlings said: “How forceful is the judiciary… to ensure that you do not get persecuted as it happened the last time the NDC were in opposition from 2000.
“In other words why should we derive our safety from just being in government? We should be able to derive our safety from the judicial system of the country and that should be overriding all of us.”
According to the founder of the NDC, “whether you are in government or outside of government you should enjoy the same security. Can NDC supporters continue to enjoy safety from the laws of the land, should the party lose the 2012 elections.”
