Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story Wednesday, Prof. Otu Nartey debunked various media reports suggesting that the former Vice-President has passed away.
He therefore expressed surprise at news about his death. “The former vice president is still alive, and we are working very hard to make sure that we get over this difficult stage.”
Alhaji Aliu Mahama has been on life support at the Cardio Centre of the hospital for about a week now.
Though Prof. Otu Nartey maintained that the former Vice President is in a “critical condition”, he said a “team of doctors are working on him, we hope he will pull through”.
The CEO who would not talk about the kind of sickness he is being treated for, confirmed Alhaji Aliu Mahama “has breathing problem” and is being taken care of to ensure that he is able to take over – thus breathing without the support of a machine.
He said the hospital has been in contact with hospitals outside and was certain former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama could soon be flown to Germany or the UK for treatment.
A former hospital administrator, and lecturer at the University of Cape Coast Medical School, Dr Arthur Kobina Kennedy, explained that some people who are put on life support do survive, while others fail to make it even after several years: depending on their condition.
He said in situations where the patient is unable to make it, the doctors take a decision in consultation with the family to discontinue the live support.
He further explained that sometimes it is clear the person cannot survive, but he or she is given the life support base on religious belief.
He also called on the media as well as the general public to respect the privacy of the former Vice-President and his family.
