It’s a fate more gruesome than even Romeo and Juliet’s.
A young Pakistani couple was tied up and had their throats slit-by the
bride’s family, no less-because they married each other for love. Police
said on Saturday that the 17-year-old woman and 31-year-old man in the
eastern Pakistan’s Punjabi village
of Satrah married without their families’ permission. Just over a week
after their June 18 wedding, the bride’s parents tricked them into
visiting with the promise their marriage would receive a blessing.
Police said, “When
the couple reached there, they tied them with ropes. He (the girl’s
father) cut their throats.” The family has been arrested, but these
types of “honor killings” are common in many parts of Pakistan. Earlier
this week, another young couple that married for love was sentenced to
death. The bride, 19, was killed by a family member, and her husband has
gone into hiding. The bride’s family has already registered to forgive
the killer, so there will be no trial.
