EC agrees to withdraw CI 73 creating new constituencies

The Electoral Commissioner has agreed with the leadership of parliament to withdraw the Constitutional Instrument (C.I) 73 and will relay an amended one.

The C.I 73 was aimed at creating 45 new constituencies following the release of the 2010 Population and Housing Census.

The C.I 73 was laid in the House by the Majority Leader, Cletus Avoka, and due to “serious errors” in the report submitted to Parliament, members called for its annulment.

The Subsidiary Legislation Committee of Parliament has recommended to the House to reject the Constitutional Instrument (C.I 73) which has been placed before it for the creation of the new constituencies, however, Members of Parliament on the Majority side think the attempt is being headed by the Minority to scuttle the plan.

The Committee has given indications that a number of Ghanaians risk being disenfranchised in the December polls if the House goes ahead to approve C.I. 73 for creation of new constituencies.

This was contained in a report submitted to Parliament on Monday by the committee where it further indicated that if the instrument is passed in its current state it could create “conflicts” because it is riddled with “errors, omissions and misplacement of electoral areas…”
