"I am very happy and really looking forward to playing for such a historic club as Bayern Munich. It's been a long wait, but is at last all over", the Spanish international player told the official Bayern TV station, 'FCB tv'.
Martínez, who travelled to Munich without Athletic de Bilbao's permission, underwent a medical examination on Wednesday morning and then returned to Spain to deposit the cheque for €40 million for the cancellation of his contract, at the headquarters of the LFP (Professional Football League).
Bayern's executive president, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, confirmed that signing Javi Martínez had been "extremely complicated", as "right from the word go there was no contact with Athletic de Bilbao". "We are very pleased that Javi Martínez is at last with us. Over the next few days we shall have to sort out different fiscal and legal problems," he stated, and went on to reveal, "In terms of salary, he has given up quite a large sum of money".
