Low turnout in EC’s mock voting

There have been reports of low turnout at two polling stations in the Weija-Gbawe constituency where the Electoral Commission is organizing a mock voting exercise.

The exercise is to afford the Electoral Commission the opportunity to test its biometric voting equipment.

The low turnout has been attributed to claims that residents were not aware of the exercise.

Gloria Kankam a freelance journalist in the area, who took part in the pilot project, confirmed to Joy News that most resident she talked to were ignorant about the exercise.

A good number of the people who took part in the exercise were mainly passersby who chanced on it, she realised.

The biometric voting is not so different from the previous method of voting, Gloria Kankam observed.

Unlike in the past where one has to check his or her details from a register before proceeding to vote, with this method, a voter has to produce the ID card for the name to be checked first and then placed the fingers on the biometric machine for verification before voting, she said.

“There is no problem at all” with the system, one of the residents who successfully went through the process shared his experience with Joy News.

The exercise is being monitored by agents of the two major political parties – National Democratic Congress and New Patriotic Party – and some observers.

Meanwhile Principal Public Relations Officer of the EC, Sylvia Annor says the public will be informed if the commission intends to expand the pilot exercise.
