Some persons affiliated with Matthews, the man who was attacked with machetes in Ashtown, Kumasi by affiliates of the Manhyia MP, have gone on a rampage, looting some shops in the area.

The reprisal attacks reportedly occurred late Thursday evening. According to Nhyira FM's Kofi Asante, 5 persons sustained injuries in the attacks and have been admitted at the hospital.

According to ASP Mohammed Tanko, the PRO of the Ashanti Regional Police, the cause of the clashes is still not known.

The Manhyia MP, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has remained tight-lipped on the issue but is scheduled to address a press conference Friday morning.

Police in the Ashanti Region were deployed to Ashtown Thursday evening to ensure calm after the initial violent confrontation in which the man identified as Matthews was gravely injured.

Nhyira FM's Kofi Asante reported that the man was not only shot in the leg but sustained serious machete wounds during the attack. A woman said to be the victim’s sister was also hit by a stray bullet but is in stable condition.

The motive for the attack remains unknown and Mathews is currently hospitalized and receiving treatment. Immediately after the incident, police took over the town to protect the peace.

According to Kofi Asante, Prempeh was in Ashtown early Thursday morning with his team to distribute party paraphernalia and books to the constituents and there have been reports of a misunderstanding between some residents and the MP’s associates.
