Row over feeding fees between minister and heads of SHSs deepens

The Education Minister and heads of senior high schools are set for a collision course over feeding fees for boarding students in senior high schools.

A row erupted when the Minister, Mr. Lee Ocran issued a directive to the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) to reverse the feeding fees from GH¢2.50 to the original GH¢1.80 for the 2012/2013 academic year.

Officials of CHASS have expressed grave concern about the implications of reversing the feeding fees but Mr. Lee Ocran has threatened to demote, sack or transfer any headmaster who flouts the directive.

Although there are documents confirming that the GH¢2.50 daily feeding fee per student being charged was approved by the Ghana Education Service, the minister has maintained he never approved the figure.

He told Joy News’ Araba Koomson that even though the GES had recommended the GH¢2.5 per student, when he took it to Cabinet, the figure was rejected.

Once Cabinet rejected the figure recommended by the GES, “I came and told them that you can’t charge [GH¢2.50].”
