Joyce Banda sworn in as new Malawi president

She became southern Africa's first female head of state after taking the oath before parliament in the Malawian capital, Lilongwe.
Ms Banda, who had been vice-president since 2009, was cheered and applauded before, during and after the ceremony.
Mr Mutharika, 78, went into cardiac arrest on Thursday, although his death was not confirmed until Saturday.
The delay in announcing his death had prompted fears of a power struggle.
There had been speculation that the late president's inner circle was trying to circumvent Malawi's constitution to prevent Ms Banda from taking over and instead install his brother, Foreign Minister Peter Mutharika.

Who is Joyce Banda?

  • 1950: Born
  • 2009: Elected vice-president
  • 2011: Fell out with President Bingu wa Mutharika but he failed to have her removed from her post
  • 2012: Sworn in as president after Mr Mutharika's death
  • Southern Africa's first female head of state
  • Has large charity to help educate and empower women
  • Her father was a well-known musician; her sister was hired to work in pop star Madonna's school
Ms Banda had fallen out with Mr Mutharika in 2010 and became one of his fiercest critics. She was expelled from the ruling Democratic People's Party (DPP) and formed the People's Party.
She was elected as vice-president in 2009 and Mr Mutharika had failed in his attempts to have her removed from her post.
At present, there are just a handful of MPs in her party but the BBC's Raphael Tenthani in Blantyre says many more are likely to join now that she is president.
On Friday, Information Minister Patricia Kaliati had said Ms Banda could not take over as head of state because she had gone into opposition.
The UK, the US and the EU have called on Malawi to respect the constitution.
Appeal for calm Since the government officially confirmed Mr Mutharika's death on Saturday morning, Ms Banda has insisted the constitution would be followed in the matter of succession.
"What is going on is that the constitution says when there is a vacancy in the office of the president, the vice-president shall assume office and finish the term," she told the BBC on Saturday.
Malawi's President Bingu wa Mutharika - 18 July 2011 There have been growing protests against Mr Mutharika over the last year
"When that happens, the vice-president assumes office. We are now, today, going through the process."
She said she had met the heads of the army and police, the attorney general and other officials before giving a news conference on the situation.
Those officials were behind her as she spoke, saying a cabinet meeting would be held soon to discuss funeral arrangements.
She also said preparations were being made to bring Mr Mutharika's body back from South Africa, where he was taken after his cardiac arrest.
"In the meantime, I call upon all Malawians to remain calm and to keep the peace during this time of bereavement."
She said that 10 days of national mourning would be held.
Mr Mutharika governed Malawi for eight years, but was recently accused of mismanaging the economy and becoming increasingly autocratic.
He fell out last year with former colonial ruler Britain, which withdrew its direct aid, accusing the Malawian government of mishandling the economy and of failing to uphold human rights.
Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, with an estimated 75% of the population living on less than $1 (60p) a day.
The country has suffered shortages of fuel and foreign currency since the UK and other donors cancelled aid.

I AM SICK OF ADELE

I know I risk being extremely unpopular by saying this but...okay, here goes...
I am sick of Adele.
Yes, she is very talented. Yes, she has a great voice. Yes, she can sing her lungs off like no one's business. Yes, she is on every radio station all the time every day. Yes, her songs blast through the sound system at the mall, the grocery store, the local restaurant, every car at my daughters' school at pick-up and drop off. Yes, my children warble out her lyrics and will yell at me if I attempt to change the station. Yes, a car drove by my house just now and I can

hear the all too familiar tune about setting fire to the rain. Yes, I'm having a hard time visualizing this on-fire rain. Yes, I know I shouldn't be so literal, but I keep seeing the rain dousing the flames instead of the other way around. Yes, I'm choking on all the smoke.
Yes, I get it. Adele has had her heart broken. She has loved and lost and is able to express her emotions through her lyrics. In all her songs. Every. Single. Song. Every note drips of excruciating pain.
Yes, most of us can relate to Adele—that's why her '21' album continues to break records all over the world. That's why its three singles, "Rolling in the Deep," "Someone Like You," and "Set Fire to the Rain," became worldwide-number one hits. That's why last year she sold 6.7 million albums in the U.S.—-more than Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga combined. That's why at the Grammy Awards last month, Adele won best album—her sixth award out of six nominations.
By now most people who listen to the radio or watch television or read magazines or have a pulse know the story. The wrenching lyrics were written shortly after a failed year-long romance. She has referred to her ex as "the love of my life." (And better to have loved and lost than to have never made millions at all). She told People magazine last year, "That was probably the lowest point of my life." Adding, "I locked myself in my house for nine months drinking four bottles of wine a night."
Before you tell me I'm a hater, I admit the problem is me. Basking in the pain of heartbreak is a luxury for the young (or celebrities like Demi Moore). For the rest of us, we feel pain but we can't bask in it. We don't know how to bask anymore. I can't even remember the last time I basked, but I'm sure it was before kids.
Instead, we non-baskers make dinner and check homework and worry about our children, our aging parents, our spouseless moms or dads, the economy, the bills. We don't lock ourselves in a house and drink four bottles of wine a night. And if we did, we'd have more troubles to sing about—we'd be dead or divorced or child protective services would take our kids or we'd be in jail or the moms in the carpool lane would shoot us very dirty looks when we'd swerve into the lot to pick up our kids, still buzzed and probably not fully clothed.
Maybe I'm alone in this, but I don't want to hear the sound of searing pain in someone's voice—especially someone I don't know. There's enough searing pain in life, I don't want to experience it vicariously—especially when I am in the car alone, looking to belt out some lyrics while I sing on a stage in front of an adoring audience that exists only in my head ("And now, the incomparable Irene Zutell will perform Bad Girls by Donna Summer").
Adele takes me off that stage and into a dimly lit pub where I swill pitchers of warm beer and then curl up in the fetal position and rock back and forth while sucking my thumb.
I don't want to go to that pub. I don't want to roll in the deep. I don't want to turn up out of the blue uninvited (although after four bottles of wine, it's very possible). Most of all, I don't want to find someone like you—because you're a jerk. I want someone who makes me laugh.
Adele has a new boyfriend. I hope she's happy and in love and her next album reflects those emotions. But until then, I'd dust off my Donna Summer CD and sing about Bad Girls yeah. See them out on the street at night. Walking.
Toot. Toot. Beep. Beep.

Rihanna on Chris Brown reunion "i don't have anything to hide

Rihanna doesn't "hate" anyone for having an opinion on her reunion with her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, but the singer is still going to do what she wants to do.

"I'm still going to do what I want to do," Rihanna told Elle Magazine (via AOL's The Boombox). "It's like, one less skeleton in the closet, one less burden, one less secret; now you know that, so you can say what you want about it. I don't have anything to hide."

An Open Letter to Rihanna | An Open Letter to Chris Brown

"I respect what other people have to say. The bottom line is that everyone thinks differently," she continued in Elle's May Issue, on newsstands April 17. "It's very hard for me to accept, but I get it. People end up wasting their time on the blogs or whatever, ranting away, and that's all right. I don't hate them for it."

Love it or hate it, Rih Rih's "Birthday Cake" remix, featuring Breezy, continues to climb the charts. On March 3, the track debuted at No. 73 on Hot 100 Airplay with 16 million audience impressions and a 372% increase in spins, according to Nielsen BDS. The title also debuted on Hot Digital Songs at No. 62  and No. 71 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. The quick start led to a No. 63 debut for "Cake" on the Billboard Hot 100. In its fourth week, "Birthday Cake" moved to top ten of R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and ranks at No. 4, today (April 4).

Rihanna continued to share on how she dealt with the aftermath of her volatile relationship with Brown. "I was going through the hardest time of my life. I was angry, sad, confused, torn. I was still in love. And I needed to talk about it," she said.

She channeled her pain into her music, specifically her fourth studio album, "Rated R" (2009). "That was the only way I could get peace, because it was in my head, and I couldn't leave it there."

"It gave me guns. I was like, 'Well, f*ck.' They know more about me than I want them to know. It's embarrassing. But that was my opening," she said. "That was my liberation, my moment of bring it. I wanted people to know who I am. Whatever they take that to be, good or bad, I just want them to know the truth."

Gov’t Blows US$1.1bn. On Cedi Free Fall

FROM THE beginning of this year to date, an amount of US$1.1 billion dollars has been spent by the Bank of Ghana to shore up the local currency, BUSINESS GUIDE has learnt.

The phenomenon, according to experts, has been accentuated by the lack of business confidence on the part of investors and the belief that government will overspend this election year.

An economist, Dr Joe Abbey, whom this paper spoke to on the issue, said the activity could throw the economy out of gear if not checked since it had started witnessing the onset of capital flight – where foreign investors clear off their investment to their home countries.

The situation has further mounted pressure on the cedi, hence its free fall.

The cedi depreciated at a much faster pace of 5.9 percent in January 2012 compared to 1.9 percent in January 2011.

Currently, the cedi rate to a dollar is GH¢1.72.

Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, has explained that the Ghana cedi has had to cascade mainly on account of investors’ strong demand for foreign exchange among other speculative activities.

Attempts to get officials of the Association of Ghana Industries to respond to the situation was unsuccessful but George Kweku Ofori, President of Ghana Union Traders Association (GUTA), has noted members of the association were going to embark on a demonstration to register their displeasure over the depreciating value of the cedi.

According to him, the high exchange rate was greatly affecting operations of GUTA members since most of them imported goods.

The automotive spare parts industry has also not been spared the ordeal. In the past few years the industry has grown enormously, while creating jobs at the same time.

Clement Boateng, spokesman for the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association, speaking to this paper said the industry used to be a very lucrative one, but the fast depreciation of the cedi was responsible for the predicament of most spare parts dealers.

I AM DEMANDING HALF OF FACEBOOK

A US man who is continuing with a legal claim for half-ownership of Facebook will not be able to question the firm's founder, Mark Zuckerberg, at this stage in the lawsuit, a judge has ruled.

Paul Ceglia says he gave Mr Zuckerberg $1,000 (£629) in 2003 to help set up Facebook and that a deal was signed.

Facebook says the document is a fake and wants the case to be dismissed.

Mr Ceglia's lawyers have been asked to submit expert reports on the contract within two months.

Magistrate Judge Leslie Foschio also said that Mr Ceglia's lawyers would be able to question Facebook's own experts about the two-page document.

While Mr Ceglia, of Buffalo, New York, says the contract entitles him to half-ownership of Facebook, Mr Zuckerberg counters that he had not conceived of the social network at the time.

Facebook's lawyers say Mr Ceglia and Mr Zuckerberg signed a contract in 2003 to develop street-mapping software. They claim that Mr Ceglia subsequently doctored the document to insert Facebook references.

In addition to not being able to question Mr Zuckerberg at this stage, Judge Foschio also refused to allow Mr Ceglia's lawyers access to Mr Zuckerberg's

Autopsy; White residues found in Whitney Houston's room

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Whitney Houston was found face-down in a bathtub with cocaine in her system and drug paraphernalia on the bathroom counter nearby, investigators revealed in the singer's final autopsy report released Wednesday.

The report delivered a grim accounting of Houston's final hours nearly three months ago. The singer complained of a sore throat before an assistant suggested she take a bath before the start of a pre-Grammy Awards gala. By the time the assistant returned, Houston had drowned and was lying face down in the tub.

Investigators who scoured the room later found in the bathroom a "spoon with a white crystal like substance in it," and a white powdery substance in a drawer and on a mirror, according the report. The report does not specifically identify the substances as cocaine, although toxicology tests discovered the drug in Houston's heart and extremities.

The report provides a sad footnote to Houston's life, revealing the toll the singer's drug use took on her body.

When coroner's officials said two weeks ago that Houston died from accidental drowning, they also revealed that cocaine had played a role in her death. The office has said there were signs of both chronic and recent use.

An investigator noted a hole in the singer's nose, listed under "history of substance abuse."

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said he could not discuss how recently Houston may have used cocaine, or other details of the final report.

Beverly Hills police Lt. Mark Rosen said the investigation is still open and he could not comment on the findings. The department has said there did not appear to be signs of foul play.

On her final day alive, Houston complained she had a sore throat for several days, and an assistant suggested she take a bath, according to the report. By the time her assistant returned, Houston had been submerged for at least an hour, the report estimates.

Water soaked the floor, seeping into the bedroom area.

Investigators initially expected drugs or alcohol played a role in Houston's death, but no alcohol was found in her system. They eventually ruled her death an accidental drowning, with heart disease and cocaine use cited as contributing factors.

Houston's death came just hours before a pre-Grammy gala thrown by her mentor Clive Davis. She was attempting another comeback by starring in a remake of the film "Sparkle," in which she plays the mother of three girls who form a singing group and struggle with fame and drug addiction.

A trailer released Monday featured Houston prominently, including a snippet of her performance of the classic gospel song "His Eye Is on the Sparrow."

Toxicology results also showed Houston had marijuana, Xanax, the muscle relaxant Flexeril, and the allergy medication Benadryl in her system. None of those drugs were considered factors in her death.

The singer also had buildup of plaque in her arteries that can restrict blood flow. Winter has said the condition is common in drug users. The report indicated a 60 percent blockage in the singer's right coronary artery.

The singer had battled addiction for years, but friends and family have said she appeared committed to making a comeback in the months before her death.

"The biggest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy," Houston told ABC's Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 television interview with then-husband Bobby Brown by her side.

AN UNKNOWN SON OF KWAME NKRUMAH SURFACES

The age old saying that “Nkrumah never dies” seems to carry much more weight than many may think.

Just when almost all Ghanaians have come to accept that Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has four children, a fifth child has surfaced and says he is a true son of Osagyefo.

His name is Dr. Onsy Anwar Nathan Kwame Nkrumah, a Saturday born (Kwame), whose birthday fell on March 17, 1957 - 10 days after Ghana attained independence.

He has granted an exclusive interview with Citifmonline.com about his life.

Born in Egypt to an Egyptian mom by name Isis Nashid, the 55-year-old son of Osagyefo told Citifmonline.com he has been in and out of Ghana for the past 30 years and has now “decided to settle here in Ghana.”

At an ‘unveiling’ ceremony in the capital, Accra, several family members who had trooped in from Dr. Nkrumah’s hometown were full of praise for the new ‘Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’ who according to them had renovated and refurbished the family house which had been in a deplorable state for years.

Conspicuously missing from the program were all the known children of Osagyefo. Dr. Francis Nkrumah, Gamel Nkrumah, Samia Yaaba Nkrumah and Dr. Sekou Nkrumah absented themselves for unknown reasons.

Asked why his siblings were absent from such a ceremony he said “well, you know that we’re from different mothers so we all somehow lead separate lives which is unfortunate, but that’s how it is… but we know ourselves, they know me, I know them. We relate by phone sometimes, e-mail with some of them like Gamel, I see him each time I pass through Egypt and I see him more than the siblings.”

He said his mother Nashid was first with Osagyefo before he was married to Fathia and he was the second child after Dr. Francis Nkrumah.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sekou Nkrumah has denied knowledge of his “brother” on social media network – Facebook.

In reaction to a post on the topic, Sekou said: “A free history lesson, Nkrumah married Fathia on 31st December 1957, their first son Gamel was born on the 18th of March 1959. Samia on 23 June 1960, and Sekou 1 December 1963.”

NDC IS FULL OF NOISE MAKERS AND HYPOCRITES-NYAUNU

Michael Teye Nyaunu, has again challenged party members and voters in general to vote against parliamentary and presidential candidates including the President, who they believe are unfit to run on their party's ticket.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News, Hon. Nyaunu described the current  regional ministers as hypocrites and cowards for embarking on what he described as a late move to reconcile former President J.J Rawlings and sitting President John Evans Atta Mills.

Hon Nyaunu, who told Citi News he has finally decided to run for Parliament this year on an independent ticket, said: “There are too many hypocrites, sycophants and cowards in the NDC. Where were they all along? Does it mean that they have finished satisfying their selfish motives?... I’m wondering why people can’t talk.”

He said again that: they are not able to tell the President ‘as for this that you are saying is not correct.’ Let us try and rise above parochial interest. Presidents come and go and Ghana will still be there and if we all sit down and say because he is my President I cant talk and he comes to misgovern and we go into a ditch what do we say?

“Is about time Ghanaians begin to vote for candidates based on their capacity and integrity and not on party lines. We have to live above those parochial, naive positions.”

“A lot of people who don’t have the capacity come under political organisations and when they get the votes they do not do anything... If my party decides to put a goat down and puts NDC around its neck, should I vote for that goat? That is why God has given us independent head and faculty to think and live with those consequences of our actions and inactions.

“People should do the right things in the interest of mother Ghana,” the legislator pointed out.

RIHANNA HAD THE GUTS TO TAKE CHANCES IN BIG SCREEN DEBUT

With the much-anticipated "Battleship" set to release May 18, some are still skeptical as to whether Rihanna can make a successful transition from music to film. But even in the beginning stages of the movie, director Peter Berg never doubted the pop singer's talent.
"I'm a big believer in musicians-turned-actor," Berg told MTV News, proceeding to list many of the musicians who went on to make it on the big screen.

"You could do a great MTV special about all the musicians that have acted," he continued. "It starts for me with Frank Sinatra, who won an Oscar for a movie called 'From Here to Eternity.' Mick Jagger was in a film called 'Performance.' David Bowie was in 'The Man Who Fell to Earth.' Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand. Did you see a film called 'Precious'? Mariah Carey — remember how awesome she was in that film? Terrific. Lenny Kravitz. The late Whitney Houston was in a film called 'The Bodyguard.' "
Houston, however, played a musician in "The Bodyguard," which was a role very familiar to her. If the "Talk That Talk" singer were to depict the beloved singer and actress in a Whitney Houston biopic — as she told the U.K. Press Association she "would give her entire life to do" — she would no doubt have more experience to draw on than someone who was just an actress. But Rihanna's role of FBI agent Raikes in "Battleship" is unfamiliar territory.
The thought never worried Berg. "Well, look at Mariah Carey in 'Precious.' I mean, my God, you would never have thought that was Mariah Carey," he said.

Berg says that what helps musicians as they cross over into acting is that they already have many of the same skills actors possess.
"They're very artistic. They're expressive. They're honest. They're willing to take chances," the director explained. "And I knew from the second I saw Rihanna in her videos that that girl had real charisma. She came in and had a long meeting with me. We just played around, and she really didn't even know what was going on, but what was apparent is that she really has the guts to take chances. There's probably no more single important skill than that, that you can ask for in an actress."

RAWLINGS WOULD NOT BEG MILLS

Suspended General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress and aide to the Rawlingses says the former president will only be back on the campaign trail of the National Democratic Congress if the values and principles he so much reveres are restored in the party.

Kofi Adams insists no amount of prompting and appeals would get him back if the values, conviction and principles which are the foundation on which the NDC was formed are broken.

He was speaking to Joy News’ Evans Mensah on Top Story over attempts by a coalition of chiefs, regional ministers to reconcile with President John Mills.

Upper East Minister Mark Woyongo had confirmed attempts to get the two most powerful forces within the NDC to bury the hatchet and “sing from the same hymn sheet.”

Whilst he would not clearly admit that the reconciliation is to bring Mr. Rawlings back on the campaign trail, he was however unequivocal, saying peace must reign between the two men as election 2012 beckoned.

But Kofi Adams said Mr. Rawlings is not aware of any such meeting describing it [meeting] as a “wrong premise” which is likely to give a wrong result.

He stated Mr. Rawlings does not in any way constitute a “threat to the peace in the 2012 elections,” insisting a meeting for reconciliation is not the way to go.

He said whilst the ex-president is opened to party unity, that unity will only be premised on the values and principles of the party.

He did not however mention what those values and principles are.

Touting the credentials of the ex-president, Adams said his boss is driven by politics of conviction and not of convenience.

He said if Mr Rawlings has good reason to be part of the campaign he will join without anybody prompting him.

According to him, the former President won the 2008 elections for the NDC based on his convictions, adding if those values and convictions are restored by the party there will be no need for meeting with chiefs to get him back on the campaign trail.

He said however that Mr. Rawlings will be waiting for the chiefs to make the request for the meeting and if he schedules allow, he will meet them.

Pollster Ben Ephson is also convinced the coalition of chiefs to mediate between the two high profile personalities is not the right way to go, especially when chiefs are not allowed by the constitution to engage in partisan politics.

He would rather the council of elders of the NDC meet together with the wife of the ex-president Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings to resolve the crisis.

He said the approach the coalition is taking is too academic and unrealistic.

MLLS IS HURT BY RAWLINGS REMARKS

According to the former Supreme Court judge, Justice Kpegah  there are serious moves that are being made to resolve the differences” between former President Rawlings and President Mills.

He said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) needs the support from both big men in order to retain power and that all well-meaning supporters of the party should rally behind the chiefs from the Volta region to bring the animosity to a closure.

Some chiefs from the Volta region on Tuesday, went to see the former first couple, Mr. Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu, in a bid to help resolve the emerging factionalism within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The chiefs were led by the Awomefia of Anlo, Togbe Sri III.

In an interview with Radio XYZ 93.1 FM, Justice Kpegah said that “I am worried because if NDC is not in power, some of us will be worse of in Ghana,” adding, President Mills and Mr. Rawlings must be brought together if the party is keen on holding on to power.

Reminiscing what might have sparked the rift between the former political tag-team, Justice Kpegah said:

“I know J.J. is deeply hurt by the unsigned letter allegedly written to him by Prof. Mills, which was published in the Daily Guide. Even this letter, I know, it is not His Excellency President Mills’ style of writing… and [J.J. Rawlings] is hurt by [President Mills’] inability to distance himself from this libelous letters. I also know that President Mills is hurt by J.J. Rawlings’ reference to him at Legon as Konongo Kaya.”

He said the insinuations from both sides has caused the fissure and deepened the bitterness between the two leaders.

On whether Mr Rawlings’s absence from the campaign will affect the chances of the NDC, Justice Kpegah indicated that: “I will not state categorically that if J.J. does not take part, President Mills will lose” but “It is because of Rawlings that the president gets the support from the Volta region.”

He said the purported meeting of regional ministers in the Ashanti region over the same issue should have taken place in the Volta region because that is where a large chunk of the party’s votes comes from.

Speaking on Mr. Rawlings’ defense of the party’s deputy General Secretary, Kofi Adams, after the allegation that the latter was scheming to get the NDC out of power, Justice Kpegah said he cannot blame the former president for standing by his employee because that is what is expected of a soldier worth his salt.

He however placed the blame squarely on the doorsteps of party chairman, Dr. Kwabena Adjei, stating that he should have taken immediate steps to apprehend the situation when the cracks begun to emerge.

JAPAN WARNS NORTH KOREA

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's defense minister Friday ordered missile units to intercept a long-range rocket expected to be launched by North Korea if the rocket or its fragments threaten to hit Japan.
The Unha-3 rocket is expected to fly past western Japan after its launch from North Korea's west coast sometime between April 12 and 16. The plan has raised concerns that a failed launch, or a falling stage of the rocket, could endanger Japanese lives or property.
Friday's order from Defense Minister Naoki Tanaka came at a meeting of Japan's national security council and followed earlier instructions for the military to prepare to intercept the rocket if it enters Japanese territory.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura urged people to stay calm, saying the military is preparing "just in case.
"We don't believe anything would fall over Japan's territory. Please carry out your daily lives and business as usual," he said.
A statement from the Defense Ministry said Japan would send destroyers equipped with Aegis missile defense systems to the Pacific and East China Sea and deploy mobile Patriot missile launchers in Okinawa. An interceptor missile unit is also likely to be deployed in Tokyo, although the capital is far from the expected flight path.
North Korea has said the launch will send a satellite into orbit to study its crops and natural resources. Japan, the United States and other countries claim the launch is a cover for testing long-range missiles, in violation of international agreements.
Seoul has also warned it might shoot down any parts of the North Korean rocket heading for South Korean territory.
Japan mobilized its interceptor units but did not follow through when North Korea launched a rocket in 2009.

Interceptor missiles on the Japanese destroyers would be the first line of defense, and the land-based Patriot missiles would be a backup. Japan has successfully tested its interceptor missiles but has never used them in a real-world situation.

NPP dream team to actualize the Ghanaian dream

The nation waited, with baited breath, before and during the NPP-delegates congress, and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was, once again, given an overwhelming endorsement by to lead NPP into the 2012 general elections.

This interest was generated due to the unprecedented number of well-qualified and quality of men who contested for the position and I’m really grateful to all media houses that covered the event to enable Ghanaians get a feel of the action, through their respective live broadcasts, kudos!

As we all congratulated Nana Addo for emerging the winner, we never lost sight of the amazing political maturity exhibited by all the other contestants, who are now integral part of Nana’s campaign. This is surely a positive development which we never witnessed in a post “FONKAR-GAME” NDC congress to elect saint Atta-Mills in sunyani.

Again, I thank all these other aspirants, for pledging support for Nana Addo on that day and I’m glad Nana has included them in his campaign, and I know they are going to be inextricably linked to Nana Addo’s government because, these are dignified and very knowledgeable individuals.

Nana, in his acceptance speech, on that day, looked dignified and sounded very much presidential and it is my belief that he will bring to bear, his enormous political experience when elected president, in order to bring economic relief to Ghanaians, by building on the foundation laid by president Kuffour.

The nation, again, experienced a high level of anxiety on the night of 28th march, 2012, when Dr. Mahamoud Bawumia landed at KIA from his base in Zambia, amidst speculations that his trip back home was for the purpose of him being announced as the running mate for Nana Addo. Dr Bawumia was actually asked by journalists at the airport, as to whether his home-coming had anything to do with his running mate amibition. And as expected, and being smart person as he is, he skillfully dodged the question and only ended up keeping the nation on edge.

Dr. Bawamia unveiled

The following day, at NPP national headquarters at asylum-down (Accra), Dr. Mahamoud Bawaumia was again chosen by Nana Addo to partner him for the upcoming December general elections. Ghana is currently blessed with a ‘senior’ journalist who always receive letters cataloguing concerns of NPP-MP’s and other NPP party officials who want their voice heard.interestingly, letters by officials of Atta-Mills-led NDC,which this individual is deeply in-love with, never deem it fit to send their concerns to him for publication. Now,you see the gargantuan irony here?

This individual supports Atta-Mills with all his hear and therefore will never do anything to rock the boat. As such, the current NDC intra-party wild inferno has continue to be invisible to him, while imaginary petty squabbles in the NPP are presented as looming unprecedented apocalypse. Now,if this is what journalism is all about, then trust me, some of us wouldn’t bother going settling for the infamous dark days of “culture of silence”!!!

When he was first chosen to partner Nana Addo in 2008, many were those who expressed concern on the grounds that Dr. Bawumia wasn’t well known within the rank and file of the New Patriotic Party. Others were of the view that there were some particular individuals around the flag bearer, who were very much instrumental in Nana’s choice of Dr. Bawumia, and therefore not very happy with the idea.

This whining seems to be happening this time too. But whatever it is, I would urge all members of NPP to burry their differences and rally behind the flag bearer and “the chosen one”, Dr. Bawumia, for the task ahead. The Atta-Mills-led government has totally failed and the good people of this nation have already made up their minds to throw them out at the polls on 7th December. However, we must not lose sight of the fact that, though NDC has no knowledge in governance because they are simply not critical thinkers. Members of NDC delight in pipe-dream-thinking when it comes to governance but are highly efficient in the area of winning elections through gargantuan electoral fraud.

Dealing with complacency

This characteristic electoral fraudulence prowess of NDC therefore presents NPP with a great challenge which we can only be surmounted when members solidly united behind the party’s ticket.Already,a vagabond like Nii lantey vanderpuye, who ironically is at the right hand of saint Atta-Mills at the seat of government of a nation being superintended by the Almighty God Himself, has openly said he will never obey EC regulation that mandates all of us to desist from physically preventing people from registering but rather fill complain forms. This kind of mind-set, coming from no other person than the operation director of saint Atta-Mills, must certainly serve as a fore-taste of what is in-store for us, as a people, during the coming December elections.

I know Nana Addo is an astute politician with a sound sense of judgment and will therefore be able to adequately deal with situations where some individuals, with selfish interest, attempt to isolate him from the party foot-soldiers in particular, and the citizenry, as a whole. A proper channel of communication must be established between Nana Addo’s offices to receive every single information coming from grass-root members of the party, and as best as possible, Nana Addo must be accessible.

The credentials of Dr. Bawumia are a public knowledge now. I believe he is a very knowledgeable person and will therefore be able to handle the position of a vice president and I wish him well. The best pre-requisite of one’s ability to run a nation, is being an impartial judge and a good administrator and I have absolute confidence in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to deliver as vice president. However, I would urge Dr. Bawumia not to be perturbed by political desperados, who are bereft of ideas and therefore always engage in personal attacks and pointless “bla blaa blaaa”, as Nana puts it.

Mrs. Bawumia and public life

I very much ‘empathize’ with Dr. Bawumia’s young, beautiful and innocent-looking wife, Mrs. Samira Bawumia, about how she has been dramatically propelled into the lime-light. Madam, please take heart because the rank and file of NPP family is very much proud of you and that you will soon get used to the public attention. I really liked the way your little girl, Missy, was taking refuge behind you in a picture published on page 13 of 16/8/8 edition of the Daily Guide news paper. I learnt that picture was taken when the press besieged your home, soon after her daddy was confirmed for the position of a running mate in 2008. Kindly tell little Missy she will soon be moving to the flag-staff house where she can have some relative privacy away from the prowling cameras of all these paparazzi, o.k.?

I learnt Dr. Bawumia’s wife is a daughter of Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan (Chairman of PNC party). Now if it is true, then this must send a clear signal to those executives and foot-soldiers of all political parties, whose judgments are always clouded by dogmatic politicking and therefore take delight in doom-mongering, to appreciate the fact that we are all one people with a common destiny, though we might find ourselves at different ends of the political divide.

My expectations of Nana Addo’s presidency

Nana Addo will certainly be sworn-in as president on 7th December, 2013, and for me, I would like to see the eight years of his administration being centered on proper human development devoid of empty political jargons, and harness our unlimited natural resources, the latest being oil, for serious economic lift-off in order to continue to enjoy the trust of the people, come December 2016.

Our next group of leaders must learn to be welcoming to, and, comfortable with people who will tell them the truth. They must not surround themselves with sycophantic charlatans who will literally, crawl over broken-bottles just to touch the hem of public officials’ cloak, with baseless gossips about others!

Crop of leaders under Nana Addo administration must not create fertile grounds for their close associates to engage in influence peddling, which always results in bringing offices of otherwise decent public office holders into disrepute and public derision.

There must be total co-ordination, co-operation and openness in governance.Retrogresive tendencies like selfishness, cronyism, nepotism and aggressive hero-worshiping, which has become the order of the day, right under the nose of saint Atta-Mills, must be abhorred by officials of Nana Addo presidency, since we are determined to make a giant leap into the future in order to be counted among comity of nations.

Corruption must be fought with all the force we can command, so that, we can stop the current gargantuan profuse bleeding of our nation’s coffers by way of unprecedented “woyome-gate” thievery, disquised as judgment debt in order to make more resources available to be chandelled into empowering our noble and enterprising citizenry.

The eight years of president Kuffour administration laid a very sound economic foundation which has callously been destroyed by incompetent Atta-Mills and his bunch of ‘chop-chop’ crusaders. But,I have the firm belief that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s eight year rule will be very much capable of turning things round through pragmatic leadership, big dream approach to governance and restore the dignity of every Ghanaian by way of putting our current teaming unemployed youth into productive work and making  avenues for quality/affordable education to every child.

We, as citizens, must also eschew lassitude, corruption, sycophancy, bad environmental practices and unnecessary splitting of hairs over issues of national importance. We must rather learn to love one-another, and also, love our beautiful country because, NPP in power with Nana in the saddle, Ghana is surely destined for best of times!

Nana has chosen Dr. Bawumia, and true to NPP party’s character, the rank and file, backed by well oiled party machinery, has resolved to unite behind the ticket for a resounding victory on December 7th 2012.

The rich political experience of Nana Addo Dankwah Akofo Addo, coupled with unsullied economic/financial shrewdness of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is what I will describe as NPP PANORAMIC TEAM that the citizenry can bank their hopes on for total realization of what I would call the ultimate Ghanaian dream.

Our readiness to market the ticket

Finally, to Dr. Bawumia, I say, the great NPP family, as well as all those who seek to liberate themselves from the current socio-economic abyss currently being inflicted on good people of this nation by saint Atta-Mills and his cabal of incompetent greedy bastrads, are solidly behind you. We eagerly look forward to benefiting from your remarkable wealth of technocratic shrewdness. We the loyal "all die be die" 'special forces' of the great NPP are ready to effectively market our ticket for total victory on 7th December, 2012

Finally, I know duplicitous Atta-Mills is going to unleash his foul-mouthed juvenile-delinquents-vagabonds on Dr. Bawaumia, with the expressed purpose of tarnishing his unquestionably impeccable image. Consequently, I would like to sound a very strong note of caution to these NDC buffoons who are totally bereft of ideas and therefore always resort to character assassination, that this time round, if they dare throw even one chocolate-pebble at our candidates, we shall swiftly launch in retaliation, a blistering barrage of TOMA-HAWK CRUISE-MISSILES. And if they think we are joking, then, to quote Koku ‘the bull’ Anyidoho; “let them DARE”!!!

WOYOME'S SECRET LETTER TO PROF. MILLS

The Special Investigations Team (SIT) of The New Crusading GUIDE has intercepted a ‘confidential letter’ dated December 19, 2011 authored by Mr. Ray Smith, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of M-Powapak Ltd., to the President of Ghana, Professor J.E.A. Mills, concerning ‘the matter of Alfred Agbesi Woyome’. (See below for the full text of the letter under reference).

The letter which was accompanied by a ten (10) page ‘confidential document’ titled: “FACTS AND OBSERVATIONS IN THE MATTER OF ALFRED AGBESI WOYOME’, accused Mr. Woyome of “generating unnecessary havoc” and being “more interested in his own misguided political ambitions than working truly in the best interest of his party”.

“Over the years I have had close relationship with the person (Woyome) and I wish to make known to you (President Mills) the facts surrounding this matter since there is so much speculation and untruth being released in the public domain which is far from the best interest of your government”, indicated Mr. Smith in his letter to President Mills.

Underscoring that his (Smith’s) correspondence to the President was “very strictly a personal view”, Mr. Smith nonetheless hoped that “the attached document will be of some assistance to your investigation”.

In the attached ten (10) page ‘confidential document’, Mr. Smith, began by explaining the rationale for his decision to assist investigations into the ‘matter of Alfred Agbesi Woyome’ since it was his “understanding that this is currently of interest or importance to the Government since it is a potential source of embarrassment to the party (NDC) which must be dealt with”.

“In view of the fact that I and my wife have had years of contact with Woyome I believe that I can provide useful information. I will be as brief as possible to give some insight as to the character of this person (Woyome) and also to correct issues which he obviously interpreted wrongly during his various statements in the media”, volunteered Mr. Smith.

Mr. Smith recalled how well before he and his wife met Mr. Woyome, the two of them (‘the Smiths’) had been instrumental in introducing an Austrian Healthcare company to provide Regional Hospitals with concessionary finance provided by the Austrian Government.

“After Parliamentary approval the supply contracts were signed in December 1999. Following this we were introduced to H.E. the President Atta Mills, at the time Vice-President, and he kindly arranged for us to present development possibilities in a meeting of the State Council. As I recall this was some 3 months before Government changed hands in 2000”, Smith took the President on a trip down memory lane.

Mr. Smith said when they (he & his wife) met Mr. Woyome in February 2001, he (Woyome) complained that he had just formed a cleaning company with a Ghanaian businessman situated at GCB-Towers, but his (Woyome’s) partner had cheated on him and he (Woyome) wanted to withdraw.

“He was driving a very old car and was mostly accompanied by his brother Kobby Woyome. He obviously was embarrassed about the condition of his car and explained that he needed such a car as a disguise as his work does not permit him to drive a new car”, disclosed Mr. Smith.

He said from then onwards their relationship with Mr. Woyome developed into a friendship because he appeared to be a very genuine person with a passion to support Ghana’s social and economic development.

“He gave every indication that he was a trustworthy person. On this basis we worked together very well for a long time”, added Smith.

Narrating how Mr. Woyome was appointed a Hon. Vice-Consul for Austria in Ghana, Mr. Smith indicated that his wife, Mrs. Smith who was the Hon. Consul of Austria was at the time overloaded with the volume of work to be done and in the year 2004 it was recognised that a Hon. Vice Consul was necessary to ease the burden on her and she was requested to find a suitable person for the position of a Hon. Vice-Consul.

He explained further that because it was impossible to find a suitable Austrian National for the position of Hon. Vice Consul or a fluent German-speaker with the appropriate qualifications and characteristics, Mr. Woyome, “although not a German speaking was seen to have the right attitude towards Austrian/Ghanaian relations and therefore, provided that he could provide a suitable German-speaker, and cover his share of administrative costs, he could be considered for the position of Honorary Vice-Consul”.

Mrs. Smith, according to Mr. Smith, made such proposal which in fact was accepted by the Austrian Government. A contract was subsequently issued which Mr. Woyome accepted with all its conditions. One of the conditions which was verbally explained by a former Ambassador in Abidjan was that Mr. Woyome must share the operating costs of the Consulate with the Hon. Consul. Mr. Smith gave examples of Mr. Woyome’s chronic failure to fulfil the conditions of the contract, and indicated that Mr. Woyome’s claim in the media that he (Woyome) “controlled and financed” the Austrian Consulate was false.

He recalled that following his formal appointment by the Government of Austria, it was found that Mr. Woyome was advertising or projecting himself as “‘H.E’. Mr. A. Woyome”, and he had even placed that inscription or designation on his name-plate on the gates of his residence at Caprice in Accra”.

“Mr. Woyome was strongly advised to remove this and desist from the title since he was not entitled to be addressed as HIS EXCELLENCY in the position of the Hon. Vice-Consul. This appeared to have no effect and rumour had it that he was parading himself as “HIS EXCELLENCY” Consul Woyome in the Volta Region where he appeared to have influence. Also upon his appointment it was made very clear to Mr. Woyome that as an Hon. Vice-Consul he must be seen to have no participation in party politics whatsoever, in accordance with his diplomatic role requirements. In hindsight it is now clear that the above were ignored by Mr. Woyome and his position was manipulated in favour of personal interests and ambitions”, underscored Mr. Smith.

The term of Mr. Woyome’s appointment as Honorary Vice-Consul, Mr. Smith emphasised, “ended on November 11, 2008 and it was not renewed by the Austrian Government”.

Mr. Smith also recalled how Mr. Woyome informed them (‘the Smiths’) that his brother, Kobby Woyome had intentions to contest the parliamentary seat for South Tongu. He said this disclosure surprised them because in “our private opinion Kobby Woyome was entirely unsuitable to run as an MP”. However, Mr. Alfred Woyome, according to “the Smiths”, “answered that he (Alfred Woyome) could get a lot of power through the position of his brother”.

“A lot of cash was needed and listening to rumours, many unpleasant things happened during the campaign”, intimated “the Smiths”.

Mr. Smith also gave an account of how during his absence from Ghana for four months in 2007, Mr. Woyome, his brother, Kobby and his (Smith’s) company’s book-keeper, one Eugene Gbemu had colluded to manipulate the company (M-Powapak Ltd.)’s financial records resulting in the company suffering huge financial losses.

“Alfred Woyome was faced with the evidence. To settle matters amicably and to cover his family interests he stated that he would take responsibility to replace all missing cash assets. This was in April/May 2008. These assets were later determined to be, after forensic audit, a total of GH¢245,450 (At this time the exchange rate to the USD was 1:1)”, Smith indicated in his 10-page ‘Confidential Document’ to President Mills.

He said it was only in November 2011 that Mr. Woyome found it necessary to redeem his pledge to replace the missing cash even though he failed to pay interest or loss of earnings that M-Powapak had suffered. He said Mr. Woyome redeemed his pledge because of the threat of legal action.

Mr. Smith said the consequence of the theft was as follows: “(a) Due to repeated promises of re-payment the accounts of M-Powapak Ltd. for 2008 were not completed, could not be; (b) If completed, the IRS would have investigated the reported shortfalls and the facts would have had to be made known; (c) With the continued non-payment all subsequent years of M-Powapak’s annual accounts have not been submitted, due to carry-over; (d) Any revelation of the facts would have led to serious repercussions for both Woyomes – and, especially perhaps, brought embarrassment to the party as Alfred Woyome and Kobby Woyome are known party members”.

THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE MATTER IS THAT ALFRED WOYOME, KOBBY WOYOME AND M-POWAPAK’S BOOK-KEEPER WERE COLLECTIVELY INVOLVED IN CRIMINAL ACTIVITY. ONE OF THE REASONS WHY WE WERE RELUCTANT TO TAKE THE MATTER TO COURT EARLIER WAS ANOTHER ASPECT. ALFRED WOYOME TOLD US CONSTANTLY THAT HE HAS EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL. HE HAS HIS PEOPLE IN THE NATIONAL SECURITY, BNI, CID, THE POLICE, ETC”, revealed Mr. Smith.

He further disclosed that Mr. Woyome had also claimed that he (Woyome) had used the ‘missing money’ to “protect” them (the Smiths/M-Powapak) even though “he could never explain from what or of whom he had to protect us and certainly this is a fabricated story as there was no reason for such payments in our name…”

The 10-page ‘Confidential Document’ to President Mills also focused on the controversial GH¢51.2m judgement debt claim Mr. Woyome made against the Government of Ghana.

Mr. Smith made an interesting revelation to the effect that Mr. Woyome’s personal motivation for pursuing the GH¢51.2 claim against the Government of Ghana was that in the event that their joint (Woyome & Austro-Invest Management – AIM) claim succeeded then there would be a valid case for persons in previous government (NPP Administration) to be held liable for “Loss to the State”.

“Together we were responsible for the financing of projects which in hindsight were illegally cancelled by the previous Government. This has proven, by recent events, to be admitted. Clearly there was a case to be brought against the GoG for suitable recompense. THE POSITION TAKEN BY MR. WOYOME WAS THAT, IN THE EVENT OF SUCH A CASE BEING SUCCESSFUL, THEN THERE WAS A VALID CASE OF PERSONS IN THE PREVIOUS GOVERNMENT BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR ‘LOSS TO THE STATE’. AND THIS WAS THE DETERMINATION OF MR. WOYOME FOR HIS PERSONAL REASONS. Under these circumstances there was no way in which the Directors of M-Powapak, both expatriates, and one of whom being Austrian Consul, the other, Director of AIM, could possibly contemplate involvement. IT WAS THEREFORE AGREED THAT MR. WOYOME WOULD PROCEED IN HIS NAME ALONE ON THE BASIS OF GOOD FAITH, AND IN VIEW OF THIS AN AGREEMENT WAS ESTABLISHED TO SHARE FUTURE PROCEEDS IN THE RATIO 5/9 – 4/9”, articulated Smith in one of the attached documents to the main 10-page ‘Confidential Document’.

He further revealed in the main ‘Confidential Document’ that when the court decided that their joint claim was justified they (‘the Smiths’) expected Mr. Woyome to fulfil the agreement Austro-Invest Management (AIM) and Mr. Woyome had signed. However, after many reminders and pressure, Mr. Woyome’s Lawyer wrote to ‘the Smiths’ to outline some expenses that had allegedly already been made out of the total amount won by a court order.

“Apart from an enormous sum of approximately 3.9 million Ghana Cedis for lawyers’ cost, an amount of Euro 2 million was for ‘other expenses’. We were astonished when we read this and requested Mr. Woyome through his lawyer to explain what this amount was used for. After three weeks and numerous reminders to Mr. Koka (Woyome’s Lawyer) we received another letter informing us that we are not entitled to any amount because we did nothing for the syndication and financial engineering of the projects,” lamented Mr. Smith to President Mills.

He indicated that in view of Mr. Woyome’s failure to respect the agreement, they instructed their solicitor, Mr. Tony Lithur to institute legal action to compel Mr. Woyome to pay them their share of the GH¢51.2 million judgement debt, and also to claim interest as the payment for the claim was done many months ago.

“…It is time that Mr. Woyome understands that he cannot rule the world and that justice to all his doings has to be done. In regard to the CAN 2008 support, everything is well documented and is in the hands of our Lawyer, Mr. Tony Lithur”, Smith declared.

“Finally, I like to say that knowing Mr. Woyome so well it becomes very clear to us that he is prepared to use anyone and any situation to achieve his personal ambitions regardless of party policy and sensibility. If he continues on his present path he can only generate more damage than good. He is so concerned with his own glorification that he does not realise what turmoil he generates and the ammunition he provides to the opposition. Because he cannot keep his mouth shut he is far from being an asset to the present Government; only a source of unnecessary embarrassment…,” emphasised Mr. Ray Smith

Please stay tuned for further developments…
