The Ashanti regional capital of Kumasi has been selected as the venue for the special delegates’ congress of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on September 1.
The congress, according to party executives, is to endorse the leader of the ruling party, President John Dramani Mahama as the flagbearer to contest the 2012 presidential elections in accordance with the party’s constitution.
The special delegates’ congress was necessitated by the demise of President John Evans Atta Mills who had been elected as the party’s flagbearer at the Sunyani congress.
The venue was disclosed by the Ashanti regional chairman of the party, Joseph Yamin in an interview with Accra-based Joy FM. He said “lots of factors were considered in selecting the region. One of them is that the region is a central point in the country for everybody coming in from across the country.
“In terms of accessibility, accommodation and the like I think the region has them all, also considering the fact that we have just two weeks for the congress.”
Mr. Yamin, however, dispelled suggestions that the NDC decided on the Ashanti region because it is the stronghold of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and it is an attempt to woo voters in that part of the country.
He said he does not believe the region is the fortress of the main opposition, adding that “we’d all see the crowd that would turn up and this would prove the dominance of the NDC here in the region. People would know that the Ashanti region does not belong to the NPP.”
“I just want everybody to adopt the wait and see attitude and we would see how massive the turn out in the region would be,” he added.
