I will rename Tamale Sports Stadium in memory of Aliu Mahama – Akufo-Addo

Presidential Candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has pledged to rename the Tamale Sports Stadium after the late former Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, if he is voted President of Ghana.

The Tamale Stadium was built by the NPP under President Kufuor, in preparation for the 2008 African Nations Cup. The proposed renaming of the stadium is part of three projects the NPP Presidential Candidate announced at a Northern Regional Rally in Tamale on Wednesday.

The other projects are the establishment of a Northern Development Fund which was an NPP campaign message back in 2008) and efforts aimed at uniting the people of Dagbon.

Thousands of people attended the regional rally at Tamale which was also addressed by former President John Agyekum Kufuor. A minute of silence was held in remembrance of the late former Vice President, Aliu Mahama.

According to Nana Akufo Addo a new NPP administration will establish a Fund to develop the Northern region.

“We are going to set up a Northern Development Authority, backed by a Northern Development Fund, to accelerate the development of the three regions of the North so that we can bring employment and work, business and progress to the people of the three Northern regions”, Nana Akufo Addo told the mammoth crowd.

He accused the NDC of stealing his 2008 idea of a Northern Development Authority, which the current administration renamed Savanna Accelerated Development Authority-SADA. He recalled how then Vice Presidential candidate, John Mahama mocked his idea of a fund for the three Northern regions suggesting that the NPP should rather use the money to pay debts owed the Volta River Authority as of that time.

“SADA, like the Better Ghana Agenda, has been a spectacular failure”, Nana Addo said.

“In memory of Aliu Mahama I am going to bring back the original NPP proposal and in the next four years, by the grace of God, we are going to see unprecedented development of the three regions of the North”, he added.

On peace in Dagbon, Nana Addo pledged to work hard to bring Abudus and Andanis back together again as one people.

“We are going to bring Abudus and Andanis together again, here in Tamale and the rest of the Northern region”, he said.

Former President Kufuor, whose presence has given the Akufo Addo campaign a major boost, accused the NDC of refusing to give credit to his administration for sourcing funding for several projects the current administration has been implementing.

He mentioned the refurbishment of the Tamale Teaching Hospital and several projects under the Millennium Challenge Account as some of the several projects which his administration secured funding for.

He asked the people of the North to vote against the NDC, a party he described as best at propaganda.
