91 percent of school girls sexually abused - report

A study conducted in selected districts across the country has shown that majority of the school girls across the country have one way or the other been sexually abused.

As much as 91.8 percent pupils between the ages of 15 and 18 that were surveyed showed that they had experienced one form of sexual abuse or the other at the hands of teachers, neighbours, playmates or boyfriends and girlfriends. 


Charles Sakyi, Deputy Executive Director of the Centre for the Development of People, said the situation is alarming and is gradually turning into an accepted norm.

He said further that there is an urgent need for parents to educate their girl-child about some overtures that men use in luring unsuspecting girls to bed.

The report also revealed that over fifty per cent of the perpetrators of the act escaped without been caught and punished.


The report also indicates that over thirty per cent of victims of sexual abuse kept quiet and repress the issue over time

According to the Ghana Education Service Director for Kwabre East District, where the incidence of abuse was high, a monitoring team has been put in place to ensure the practice is curbed.

He said that parent's must take good care of their female wards and make sure they are free from this abuse.



He further added that children are normally vulnerable when they engage in labour.
