The Serie A has began and our Guest writer from Forza Italian Football,PAT GULLACI previews the new season’s
capocannoniere contender and has file this............
Antonio (Toto) Di Natale – Udinese
The soon to be 35 year old enjoyed another magnificent season with
Udinese last season netting 23 goals in 36 appearances. Di Natale has
been crowned leading goalscorer twice in the past (2010 and 2011) so
he’s no stranger to the award and he doesn’t look like slowing down.
He recently earned a spot back within the Italy national team, even
scoring against European and world champions Spain after coming on as a
substitute.
Di Natale will once again be the man Udinese look to up front and
this season he’ll have even more pressure than ever to score with the
Udine club loaning out both Gabriel Torje and Antonio Floro Flores.
Di Natale will be partnered with unproven attackers Luis Muriel and
Italian youngster Diego Fabbrini. Season 2012/13 could be make or break
for Toto. Can he in his mid 30′s become only the seventh player in the
history of Italian football to win the capocannoniere award three times?
Edinson (El Matador) Cavani – Napoli
The 25 year old Naples man is primed for big things in season
2012/13. He too scored 23 goals last season and will be looking to do
even better as Napoli chase that elusive Champions League spot.
Cavani was sublime at times throughout Serie A and has a knack for
scoring in the big games. Napoli appear to have fended off the likes of
Chelsea and Manchester City as they consider El Matador untouchable.
Can Cavani become the first Uruguayan since Ettore Puricelli in
1940 to win the award? Time will tell however Cavani could very well be
considered the favourite to take out the award.
Diego (El Principe) Milito – Inter
Another striker heading towards his mid 30′s, Diego Milito makes
our list as another serious contender to take out the capocannoniere
award. Milito finished second behind last year’s winner Zlatan
Ibrahimovic on 24 goals.
Pazzini’s departure sees Antonio Cassano come in for Inter and this
will no doubt help Milito as Fantantonio’s service is first class and
I’m sure the Inter frontman is licking his lips at the idea of Cassano
feeding him in front of goal.
Milito has never won the award and as Inter seek a resurgence the
prolific Milito will lead from the front. Interisti will be counting on
the veteran to continue his remarkable form in front of goal.
Stevan (Jojo) Jovetic – Fiorentina
Another
club to have barked off interest from rivals, Fiorentina will be
pleased to have kept their incredible young striker (and captain) Stevan
Jovetic at the club.
The man nicknamed ‘Jojo’ will be out to build on a successful 2011/12 season in which he bagged 14 goals in 27 appearances.
Should he go on to win the capocannoniere award for season 2012/13,
Jovetic would be the first Montenegrin in history to do so. An
incredible achievement for someone so young.
New coach Vincenzo Montella has brought in Mounir El Hamdaoui to
partner Jovetic up front for the Viola and the two could form a lethal
partnership as they look to rebuild the club that was not too long ago
in the Champions League.
Jovetic will be considered somewhat of an outsider for the award
however he should never be taken out of the equation for his ability is
unquestionable.
This
brings us to our mystery contender. Who could it be? With the transfer
market not yet over their is still time for clubs to bring in a prolific
striker.
Many names have been thrown up such as Fernando Llorente, Edin
Dzeko and Alvaro Negredo however they would have to achieve something
quite incredible as it’s not often a striker comes to Italy and takes
out the award in their first season.
We eagerly await which star attacker (if any) could make their way over to the peninsula.
Names you should also consider: Alexandre Pato (AC Milan), Alessandro Matri (Juventus), Pablo Osvaldo (Roma), German Denis (Atalanta).
