Fab news as Muamba back in mix

Fabrice Muamba
HOL LOTTA FUN ... Muamba had kickabout in Dubai

FABRICE MUAMBA has revealed he made his football comeback on holiday in Dubai.

The Bolton star raised hopes of a return to action with an impromptu hotel kickabout.
Muamba, 24, has been recovering from his cardiac arrest in March but was able to join in with other pros in Dubai two months later during a break with fiancee Shauna Magunda.
He said: “I was on holiday and there were quite a few other footballers in my hotel too.
“The hotel staff usually play the visitors so I was by the pool and I heard they were playing football.
“Then I went across and saw other footballers playing and I told my friends and Shauna ‘I am sorry but I am going to play football’.
“She said ‘Are you sure?’ but I just went in there.”
Muamba ended up playing 25 minutes and added: “It was just playing like normal, like I was training. It was great.
“I never tweeted the pictures to anybody but I am telling everyone now.
“It was just to get back into the groove and to get some momentum — and I enjoyed it.
“But I just hope to God that I can get back in there myself, with the 11 players on the pitch. To play again would be fantastic.”

Toni Braxton Is Being Sued For $57,000 Theft!

Unbreak My Heart singer Toni Braxton is being sued for theft, it has been reported. Yes, we’re baffled as well...
The 44-year-old R&B songstress is being sued by an advertising company for not making payments on posters produced for her cable-TV reality show ‘’Braxton Family Values.’’
The advertising company in question, National Promotions & Advertising (NPA) claims that the R&B singer owes more than $57,000. They are also suing the producers of the show, which airs on WEtv, The Urban Daily reports.
Toni Braxton’s representative, however, says that the singer doesn’t owe the company a dime, which is ruddy confusing when we’re trying to understand this situation…
NPA have claimed that they had a contract with the songstress to place 4,300 posters promoting her show around the country, claiming that Toni has nothing to do with the marketing budget of the television series and said that it was up to WEtv to make the payments.
They also claim that Braxton agreed to pay $57,000, but the singer may have a valid defense to the contract claim if she was never a party to the agreement in the first place.
Hope she manages to get out of that sticky sitch…

Previous year's portraits have included Olivia Wilde as 'Snow White's' Evil Queen and Penelope Cruz as Belle from 'Beauty and the Beast.'

Kobby Acheampong: Maturity Comes With Age…But Not So With Rawlings

Former President Rawlings’ recent comments on the death of President John Evans Atta Mills in an interview with the BBC, seems to have incurred the wrath of virtually every stalwart in the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).The latest to openly condemn his (Rawlings) remarks is the Deputy Minister for the Interior, Kobby Acheampong. In an implied manner, Kobby Acheampong used an adage to describe the former President as immature.

“Former president Rawlings, he thinks when he isn’t in control, then everything else doesn’t work… and that he is the only wise man among a nation of twenty-five million people? The answer is a “NO”! One head can’t contain all the wisdom and two heads are better than one… you see, we always say there is maturity with age, but I am seeing the reverse happening actually at this time,” he said.

The Deputy Minister for the Interior further stated that ever since the late president was sworn in, Mr Rawlings has been consistent in his uncomplimentary remarks about him (Mills) and stressed that the time has come for the NDC to boldly tell the ex-president that enough is enough.

“We’ve allowed this thing to fester; to the point where he thinks everything he says is what is right and he can disparage anybody and get away with it…You know this thing must stop at a point,” he said.
President Mills died on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at about 14:15 hours (GMT) at the 37 Military Hospital. Though the autopsy report is yet to be made ready, former President Rawlings, told the BBC World Service in Congo Brazzaville on Wednesday, that though he was shocked to hear the news of the death of Prof Mills, it did not come to him as a surprise. He revealed that Mills suffered from cancer which affected both his eye and his ear, and "he couldn’t sustain it more than three hours per day."

“Quite frankly, I think had he been advised and done something wiser earlier on, he could probably have survived for another six, seven months I guess, but he got too tight, he got extremely tight and the poor professor passed away,” Mr Rawlings said.

But the deputy Interior Minister considers the comments as distateful and accused the former president of trying to hold himself to be wiser than the entire Ghanaian population.

To him, Mr Rawlings’ jab in the said interview with the BBC was not only directed at Prof Mills, but also at his successor, President John Dramani Mahama. He added that the ex-president and NDC Founder was being disingenuous by somewhat scoffing at President Mahama’s ability to perform as president, when he (Rawlings) had once appointed him (Mahama) as a minister.

“Our telecommunication laws, our telecommunication industry had a certain ambit due to the current president, and yet, you (Rawlings) find it possible to say you don’t know whether he will be able to achieve...We are tired of this, you don’t denigrate a person even into his grave, because he has no right of response...but we, the living, will respond for him,” Kobby Acheampong said.-PEACEFMONLINE

Rihanna: 'I Want To Quit Smoking'

Rihanna is known for her bad-girl image. You know the one – leather jacket, barely-there clothes, cigarette in hand. But she has now revealed she wants to quit smoking. The singer has told the Metro that she is concerned about the damage the cigarettes are doing to both her health and her image.
She said: “I have to start looking after my voice I know it’s not good for me or my look.”
Ri-Ri has been partying a lot of late and friends and family are worried for the star’s health and have fears she will go the way of her idol, the late Whitney Houston.
The singer’s friend, Malik Pointer, told The Sun: ‘“Rihanna is basically Whitney 2.0. That kind of talent only comes around every 20 years or so"
Adding: “Rihanna is a wild child. She has the voice of an angel but she can get down and dirty. But she has youth on her side. There’s a chance she’s just getting it out of her system and she’ll find the right guy and settle down by the time she’s 30.”
With these concerns flying around it is nice to see the star start to think about cleaning up her act.

If you live until 2045, you may never have to fear death

Immortality is something all of us have thought of, but nobody really takes seriously. A 31-year-old Russian man named Dmitry Itskov wants you to seriously consider the possibility of living forever, and perhaps even plan on being able to do so by 2045. His plan, called simply "The 2045 Initiative," will sound familiar if you've seen the James Camera blockbuster "Avatar" — and he just needs a few billion dollars to make it a reality.

Itskov's project has several phases, with each step bringing mankind closer to the ultimate goal living forever. The first step in the project is to create robotic humans that can be controlled remotely. He plans on crossing this hurdle by 2020 at the latest. Then, by 2025, a human brain will be transferred into a robotic skeleton to continue life after death. By 2035, the avatar's brain will be constructed separately, and your own personality will simply be "transferred" into it when you are ready to end your human existence. And finally, by the year 2045, humans will be able to walk around in holographic avatars for eternity, never fearing death.
Not surprisingly, the Avatar project is extremely expensive, and Itskov needs some serious financial help if he's to pull it off. So, naturally, he's asking the world's richest people to help fund the movement. In return, he's pledging to help each donor on his or her own immortality quest. You know, because you just can't spend $50 billion in one lifetime.

Victor Smith’s Comments Can Affect NDC’s Fortunes - Allotey Jacobs

The Central Regional Communications Director of the ruling NDC, Allotey Jacobs, has expressed concerns about statements made by the Eastern Regional Minister, Victor Smith, on President John Mahama’s choice of a Vice President.

He said the statement has a high possibility of hurting the party during the December general elections. According to him, Mr. Smith’s statements were misplaced and misdirected as Mr. Amissah-Arthur is a staunch member of the NDC.

Mr. Smith on Thursday publicly kicked against the nomination of Mr. Amissah-Arthur as Vice Presidential nominee, arguing that he cannot win a single vote for the National Democratic Congress in December.

The former ambassador said President Mahama is gambling with the fortunes of the party by selecting the Governor of the Bank of Ghana as his partner.

But the former ambassador has rendered an unqualified apology to the President for the comments, arguing he was “misconstrued” in a statement released on Friday.

Speaking on Citi FM’s news analysis programme, Inside Politics, Mr. Jacobs stated that “the NDC delegates have the power to decide whether Mr. Amissah-Arthur is qualified to partner President Mahama as his running mate for the upcoming elections.”

“It is a matter for the congress to decide whether to go along with President Mahama if he should choose Amissah-Arthur as the running mate.”

Mr. Jacobs, however, gave the assurance that if the Eastern Regional Minster has already apologised to the President, “we will thank him for it, forget about the past and forge ahead.”-CITIFMONLINE

Mills-Mahama Stronger Than Mahama-Amissah Ticket - Kweku Baako

The Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, says the Mahama-Amissah Arthur ticket, the ruling National Democratic Congress is likely to present for the 2012 general election, is considerably weaker compared to the Mills-Mahama ticket the NDC presented in 2008.

Mr Baako made this known, Thursday, as a panelist on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme. According to Kweku Baako, the Mills-Mahama ticket the NDC presented in the 2008 elections had also been in office for the last 3½ years and therefore could consider itself well-marketed ahead of the 2012 polls.

On the other hand, he stated that the newly-formed Mahama-Amissah ticket is firstly, not a recognizable team on the ground and needs time to be marketed. Secondly, the new NDC team, in his opinion, would find it extremely tough and almost impossible to beat Akufo-Addo/Bawumia.

Throwing more light on this assertion, Kweku Baako explained that the NPP flagbearer and his running mate has, in close to two years, toured every part of this country and by this had achieved nationwide recognition.

The performance of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia team in its first attempt at the polls, where they obtained 49.77% of the vote, according to Kweku Baako should inform the NDC about the strength of the NPP candidates.

Similarly, some functionaries and activists of the NDC have expressed displeasure at the choice of Mr Amissah-Arthur as running mate as they deem it as the concession of victory to the NP ahead of the December polls.

A group calling itself the NDC Youth Coalition in a statement said, “When we heard he (Amissah-Arthur) had been appointed, none of us could immediately put a face to the name.”

National Organiser of the NDC, Yaw Boateng Gyan, in acknowledging the plight of the NDC in the choice of Amissah-Arthur has said Mr Amissah-Arthur has not yet been endorsed as the running mate for President Mahama.

“It is not yet time for him to select his running mate for the upcoming election, that will be done at congress on 1st September; after he (Mahama) has been endorsed by popular acclamation as the flagbearer. Then he, in consultation with the party, will decide if the same person (Amissah-Arthur) should be as his running mate or whether a different person should be nominated”, the NDC organizer said.

Mills chose Kwesi Amissah-Arthur - report

The choice of Mr. Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur as Vice President was in fulfillment of the departed President John Evans Atta Mills' last wishes, a close source at the Castle has revealed to The Finder newspaper.

In the aftermath of the economist cum banker's choice by President John Dramani Mahama, there have been a number of speculations about how the genial economist beat his former boss, Dr Kwesi Botchwey, to the post.

The Finder's investigation has, however, uncovered that before Mills' trip to the United States on health grounds he had indicated that he would want the Governor of the Bank of Ghana to deputise him- President John Evans Atta Mills- should he pass away.

Our sources confirmed reports that President Mahama had originally tended towards picking a female candidate for the position, but discarded that in order to fulfill his former mentor's wishes.

Mr. Amissah-Arthur is slated for vetting and approval by Parliament on Monday. He is generally expected to sail through the process smoothly.

His near anonymity in the rough and tumble of Ghanaian politics could both be an advantage and a disadvantage.

On one hand, he has not been associated with any malfeasance in his public service; on the other, his every action from now onwards will define him for the public.

With the country's macroeconomic stability shaken in the last several months by reduced export earnings and increased government expenditure, his economic background could certainly come in handy in helping to limit further damage and setting clear policies for a better and more sustainable growth.

By his long association with the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC-I) as Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, and as Governor of the Bank of Ghana under NDC-II, he certainly has a lot of experience with economic management.

The clearest endorsement of the new Veep so far has come from the think-tank IMANI, which described the governor as a fantastic choice.

"The governor impressed us with his conduct of the affairs of the Monetary Policy Committee in particular, though there is evidence that other aspects of the bank's work, such as banking inspection, have also improved," Vice President of IMANI, Kofi Bentil said in a statement shortly after news broke about the nomination of Mr. Amissah-Arthur.

The statement also indicated that the governor could bring more votes to the NDC, describing him as someone with "the potential to reach out to the middle-class and the intellectual community."

IMANI in 2010 voted Mr. Amissah-Arthur as the most inspirational public sector leader.

The group's citation stated that the governor has shown an ability to resist political pressures in setting bank policies.

"Despite pressure from the political forces to go beyond moral suasion in compelling the banks to reduce interest rates, the governor has been unwavering in going where the evidence leads".

It added, "Diplomatically, he has rebuked the government to pay the contractors and stop dithering since this has an effect on non-performing loans in the system, and by extension lending rates."

The group even saw the former governor as someone who had what "it takes to mend the broken bridges within the ruling party."-THE FINDER
