An unidentified leader of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged party members to adequately arm themselves when they assemble at the Independence Square Tuesday.
The NPP man delivered this message in an address to supporters who had gathered near the residence of the party's presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, who was recently declared by the Electoral Commission to have lost the 2012 Eleciton.
A video recording of the NPP's gathering shows two speakers telling a charged crowd that they have a message from the “next President of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”
The message, one of the speakers said, was that the party’s faithful should assemble at Independence Square Tuesday at 8 am for a special event and that the party leaders would be holding a meeting at party headquarters.
According to one male speaker, Nana Akufo-Addo and party leaders are urging them to attend the event, which amongst other things, he said, is to protect the future of supporters’ children.
The speaker warned party supporters that if they fail to attend the all-important gathering, "thieves will rule them and businesses will collapse."
A second speaker, whose identity was not clear, said former President Kufuor would be at Independence Square by around 8 am, so supporters should arrive around 6:30 am.
The speaker announced that the NPP would not accept the Electoral Commission’s verdict that John Dramani Mahama won the polls.
He pledged to let "Ghanaians know that they will not accept the stolen verdict and those who want to help President Mahama to steal, God will deal with them."
He urged members to wear party apparel and red armbands and not allow anyone to intimidate them. The speaker claimed to have information indicating that NDC National Organizer Yaw Boateng Gyan’s people would come to the event, adding that if "they try anything, we will retaliate".
He noted that although they don’t have licenses to use certain “things,” presumably arms, there are some “things” like catapults for which they do not need licenses. Woe betides anyone who tries to interrupt their event, he added.
